I know Ladygardener has her first tomatoes up. mine in the heated propagator are also showing life. Manx Marvel won the race this year. As I am now only growing them outside there is but 6 seeds in all. Manx does well outside then Lille Lise stays small an can live in a pot that can go inside should she need to. they say cherry toms do well outside so a Rosella makes 3 kind of tom. Hence 6 seeds as in 2 of each.
What are all of you planning to grow?

Thanks for starting this thread Dutchy. Yes, my Sungold are up and some saved seeds which I did back in 2022 have germinated now as well, those are Sweet Million. We find both these varieties do well outside for us. I'll see how many end up making decent sized plants and may take some to my gardening club.

My toms have been potted up and sit in the cool windowsill facing south. Yes that sounds like a contradiction but it works somehow. All 6 seeds came in the end so I have 3 spare. Something tells me I will find a place for them

All our tomatoes have now been pricked out and seem to be doing well. Everything is still inside 'tho and I won't start hardening them off for another week or so.

As we get warm weather and they are too big for inside by now I put mine in the CF. See what happens.
Happy growing LG.

I have cheated this year. Instead of growing my own from seed I bought plants from the GG. Nice healthy plants too & only £1.20p each. I've got toms setting on the moneymaker (not my favourite tom but they should taste better than supermarket bought ones). I have also planted golden sunrise & gardeners delight, that will be enough for us. All in the WIG and doing well so far.

Out here one can only buy them big and then they set you back 6 € so well done you.
Mine survived yesterdays downpour so I still have 3 going .The Manx now has flowers so I am shaking it for fertilization, despite the weather. I want new toms that are capable of dealing with my home situation so I have to get seeds and grow for, what, probably 5 years? Rosefriend?

Ladygardener, Tig, Barbara, Jasmine anyone else - just let me know!!

I was very tempted by Big Boy at the GG this morning, but somehow managed to resist. I think they are a good price at £1.20p for very healthy young plants, far more compact & bushy than I can get growing on my windowsill. It has worked out much cheaper and less effort buying them as youngsters.

For now I don't need any others I think. Thank you. Although are there half shade loving toms? Mine get sun from 12 ish afternoon. And another although, slug repelling toms would be interesting. Preferably ones that do away with slugs within a circle of 2 meters. Hm any tom grower producing that kind will get very rich

Preferably ones that do away with slugs within a circle of 2 meters. Hm any tom grower producing that kind will get very rich Tomatoes adjust after 2/3 years to a new situation. I used to sell my seeds to a breeder in California for crosses for the European market - simply because my seeds were used to unsettled weather and rain etc... Often the first time that toms are grown they are often called - terrible, not sweet, grew badly etc and that is why toms should always be grown at least twice in your own garden just to see if they need time to adjust to their new environment. At the same time they might just be not to your liking and you are better choosing something else... Toms need an absolute minimum of 6 hours pure sun - 8 is far better and mine get 10 - 12 hours a day - well, when the sun shines!! The problem that you will have Dutchy, is that the sun doesn't get to them until midday. I water in the mornings - not always easy for people that have to get to work etc but none of us are really in that situation anymore. Watering in the morning means that everything dries out quicker, the moisture from the night dries off the leaves, - less chance of fungal diseases, blight etc. In your case I would water mid morning so that the first sun starts to dry everything off. Everything open if they are under cover until it is raining. How long do you then get sun for?? Slugs and bugs, mice - well, sorry I go for the kill. You can use things like marigolds so that the slugs eat those first and leave the toms for later - all that happens is that the slugs climb the plants - they are very good climbers - so are mice of course. Since Tomato Lady I have to make sure that I have the top tomato Varieties from all over the world - that costs money for seeds and knowing where to get good quality stuff - loads just sell anything - doesn't bother them if the names are wrong. So I use Slug Pellets and Mice bait - here in Germany we can still get the good Slug Pellets and as soon as I see slime from the Big Daddies I start throwing pellets everywhere to get them to come to me - I get hundreds and hundreds early in the year - they are hungry but I am damned if they are going to eat all my hard work. After reading years ago that a pair of mice and the following generations can, in one year, have up to 2000 offspring then I have traps near the GH's and the terrace. Sorry but they can all live somewhere else!! I would suggest that you grow Cherry tomatoes - I mainly grow Beefs because I have ideal situations but also a lot of dwarfs for people that only have a balcony and no garden. Some of the Microdwarf tomatoes (up to 40/50cms) are ideal in a 5litre pot and can be put somewhere on a table, steps where the sun is, or even planted with flowers in window boxes and there are some really gorgeous varieties with surprisingly loads of juicy toms.

Thanks for that info Rosefriend, I am going to get pellets. After yesterdays 80 plus and this morning already 10 I am beyond nice.... As for mice not really a problem yet. I am trying Rosella which is a cherry and Manx Marvel which is tough. I have Lille Lise in a pot and see what she does for me. I'll see this year as a trial and error. My sun amount per day is too little for the toms but hope dies last eh? Someday I will have a new plot or kill a project developer....

My tomatoes are the weakest I've ever had. I've been trying to harden them off a bit but they're not looking the best. We shall see how things progress.

With my toms now having flowers I must remember not to just shake but also feed. Which is hard when it rains. I don't want to soak the poor plants but I do want to give liquid feed. Always something to puzzle over.

First one to ripen (with almost zero sunshine and low temps it has been a long wait for this) A moneymaker, alongside one of 5 mini cucs I've already harvested. We shared it and although this variety isn't the best tasting toms it was far better than a supermarket bought one.

I ended up with 105 tomatoes in the garden - the rest (about 50) have been eaten rotted, no matter, they are dead... Hardly any tomatoes though - only about 10/5 plants with very small toms on them BUT look what I saw yesterday.... It's called Dwarf Purple Heartthrob and only about 100/120cms high. www.tomatofifou.com/en/produit/dwarf-purple-heartthob/

Whohey, that is a good one. I hope it ripens well so you can see if it is worth keeping taste wise . Looks only stretch so far eh?
Mind you my Lille Lise is performing well and it tastes good so that is a keeper for me. Having to grow outside in half shade it is fab to have a small but perfect tom.
Should anyone from your tom group ask. Yes she can be grown well in half shade in a sheltered spot.

Those thieves that took your good crates for the tom day next year are nuts. What good can they be to them. What a palaver RF. Toms are dong fab here. A bit too fab, they grow humongous. I took a lot of pointless stuff of, tips and leaves going and some flowers that had not even opened yet. Manx Marvel is by and large the best one but Lille Lise is heavy with toms too. Such a small plant carrying so much wow. In all I am now pleasantly inundated with toms.

Do you want some different small dwarf seeds - new varieties?? I am surprisingly really peed off with these boxes - who for God's sake steal's something like that!!! Angela said to get a Plakat with Dangerous Dog or Camera in action or something....and hang it somewhere visible. Camera is back in action anyway.

Rosefriend, I have been thinking about the dwarf offer. What kind of tomatoes would those be? Manx does me and Lille Lise sits in its own pot and does well but having a sweet cherry like snack tomato would interest me. Only one type RF as I cannot have more than that extra one providing it is small.

I have a rough list but until I get the new ones from the US I won't know for certain - Ken - a good tomato friend said that he has added some surprises for me.....!!!!! They are Microdwarf's as the US call them - that means they are up to about 45/50cms...no more. I am often astounded how many toms are on these plants and they are great for window boxes of course !! There are people that only grow these varieties as they actually only have a Balcony and no garden - I talk to them often and they are very happy with the results. I'll let you know as soon as they arrive.
