Poppy has a poorly paw at the moment. She hurt it before Christmas and had a rather nasty cut but it seemed to be mending nicely, until New Year that is. We noticed that she seemed to be chewing the wound and on closer inspection she'd pulled out a lot of her fur. We took her to the vet who said she's caught a disease which made the wound very itchy, hence the chewing. So she's had an antibiotic injection, and an anti-itching (antihistimine?) injection, and I now have to administer pills: two in the morning and one in the evening - great. All you cat owners will know the joys of giving pills to cats! And we are back to the vet again on Tuesday to check on progress!

Sorry to hear Poppy is under the weather Plocket.
You need to be married to a vet nurse, Plocket. We never have problems giving our cats pills - Mrs FA has an uncanny knack of getting them to take them without any trouble at all. She's had years of practice, mind !

I don't envy you one bit havin to try and get pills into a cat. We once had to wrap one of our cats in a tea towel, crush the tablet into milk and syringe it into the cat's mouth. She didn't speak to me for days after....
Hope she gets well soon xxxx

Well I managed to grab Poppy after dinner - now that she's not got the collar on she's avoiding me! I sustained a scratch and a bite - neither severe, but did manage to get one pill down Poppy's neck and the other smeared across her teeth after she spat it out for the second time. One pill is difficult but TWO? ? I swear vets pee themselves laughing and do it deliberately!!! ;D

Sorry to hear about Poppy - I find giving a cat 1 pill is OK as long as it goes down the first time but giving 2 is just about impossible. I find adding crushed pills or the powder from inside a capsule to a favourite treat is the best method. My cats love this and they never seem to notice when I have added any medicinal extras ;D Reading this thread is the reason I started this thread - gardenworld.proboards103.com/index.cgi?board=pets&action=display&thread=1167948916

I can sympathise with your plight Plocket. It's 20 years now since I've owned a cat, but although difficult, I did always seem to be able to administer tablets and escape unscathed. The standard advice is to press lightly with the finger and thumb at the corners of the jaw to open the cat's mouth and then place the tablet on the back of the tongue. Close the cat's mouth and gently rub the cat's throat till it swallows the tablet. Our last cat sadly had to take quite a lot of tablets in what proved to be his final weeks, but this method seemed more effective than the 'in the food' option. Of course it was a different story entirely with our last dog. He would eat just about anything!

Hi Plocket Sorry to hear about Poppy 's to both of you. Following on from what Spruance has said we used to do that for my cats but we put the tablet in butter then let the cat lick our fingers. - It might be worth a try. Another idea - if she is still chewing her wounds is to ask the vet for a collar (a lamp shade type collar) I mean. To stop her from doing any more damage. They don't like it very much and try reversing out of it. But it does help. Hope she is better soon. Alicat.

Close the cat's mouth and gently rub the cat's throat till it swallows the tablet. Thanks for your sympathy, and the plasters were necessary last night Susie because I was bitten AND scratched! She hasn't bitten me since she was a kitten, and I bit her back then to show who was boss!!! Yes Spruance that's what I do! I clamp her under my left arm with my elbow and hold her tight with my left hand. My right hand tries to ease her jaws open but she clamps them shut! I did manage to get the two pills down her last night - or to be precise I got one pill down second time round, and the second pill was so soggy that I just smeared it over her teeth. The one pill this morning was much easier!!! Oh and I have got a collar for her already - the poor mite is rather distressed by it and keeps bumping into things. I'm keeping it off today though when I can keep an eye on her, but she'll have it on again tonight. Poppy goes back for a check up on Tuesday so I'll let you know how she get's on!

See, there's no reason why they can't put the pills in liquid form and supply some lil syringes to make the cat take it that way. We used to feed our cats on the dry food but when we had to give them the worming pills, we had to buy the wet stuff to mix the pills in with. The worming pills were diff colours and we could get her to take the pink ones but not the brown ones (hence the tea towel and syringe). Then they decided they like the taste of the wet stuff and refused to eat the dry stuff afterwards <sigh>

Oh Poor Poppy and Poor Plocket I was going to suggest wrapping the pills in smoked salmon - the pill tends to "stick" to the salmon - expensive I know Have no probs giving my dogs pills they would just eat it regardless if it was in their doggy bowls Good Luck J W x

Dogs do though! Even our dog who used to be really fussy and ladylike (haha) has started watching us while we eat and eating things she shouldn't.... like my mum's sandwich off the table! Even though you're not meant to give dogs chocolate, you could dip the tablet in some and they'd definitely take that then. Cats aren't as daft.

Naughty dog!!! Poppy doesn't like smoked salmon I'm afraid, and I'm not sure I'd be prepared to share mine ;D She does seem to be accepting the inevitable a little more these days and isn't lashing out at me. She still doesn't like being given the pill but doesn't make such a fuss and swallows quite quickly. Hopefully the vet will be pleased with her progress on Tuesday and she won't need more pills!!!

Famous last words! The little whatsit managed to spit her pills out too many times to count this evening!!! I eventually smeared the last soggy pill over her teeth so she licked it up!!!

Aren't their faces funny to watch when they lick something they don't like? They try to back away from the taste hehe

She's had years of practice, mind ! FA x Sorry had to titter at this FA i live next door to a vetinary nurse which can be handy but both her and the vet struggle to give the old timer any tabs. She is notorious for clenching teeth and keeping mouth firmly shut and also spitting out any tablet that manages to get prised into her mouth. Whilst at the vets last year...I watched the vet who tried to give her a tablet with a long clamp thing which held the tablet as the old time had bit her every time she tried....after several failed attempts and a puddy with firmly clenched teeth refusing to play ball. I said....shall i try?...the vets face when i used the method to open her mouth i use on horses and threw the tab at back of throat and then quickly letting her shut mouth and stroke throat....tab was gone in 20 secs flat. 15 years it took me to get the knack but oh boy was the vet impressed! No implements needed LOL. Was even more impressed that she also walked with a lead LOL. Hope Poppy is better soon Plocket.
