Catnip

I grew some catnip from seed last summer and the seedlings that weren't eaten by the cat next door grew into a few healthy plants, which I kept in one pot so they didn't look to straggly (and because I only grew them for the cat). I had to cut some of the taller spikes off because of wind damage and my housemate's cat has had his head stuck in the bush of the plant for about 5 minutes and is currently having a mad half hour around the garden. I've never seen him move so fast fat lil bugger. He even climbed a tree

I tried, but failed growing catnip, my cats love it too much ;D The seedlings were quite safe while in the GH, the trouble started once I brought the tray out to harden off. That was it the cats made a bee line for it. I had to move the tray to the top of the water butt!! I planted them out, but that cats soon started eating them, pulling them up and/or rolling over them - so the poor plants didn't stand a chance.

I'm sure I read somewhere that if you put a wire hanging basket over catnip it stops the cats pulling up the roots but the plants can grow through it. Janet.

I grow mine in pots and put hanging baskets upside down over the plant too Janet. My cat isn't particularly fussed about cat nip though!

I just grew them in a pot that couldn't be lay on-too narrow so they can't roll all over it. I didn't think the seedlings were going to survive but I have a healthy plant now. Don't really mind what happens to it because it's purely for the cat.

Mine is in a large "long tom" pot and it's hysterical watching the cat trying to get to it when she is in the mood. Like you Aprilaydee, I thought carefully about what container it was going to go in so the cat couldn't sit on it!

A bit "off topic" but does anyone grow cat grass? I've done several pots for my persian "sofa cat" - she doesn't do "going outside!" and she loves it. I wondered if anyone else has grown it and how much at a time - I usually do a 5" dwarf pot each time.

No I've not tried it myself. My cat goes out when she needs to and is quite happy with our grass. I've always thought it a bit like growing a bit of turf from a football pitch!
