Hi!
As gardeners and pet lovers I’m sure most cat lovers will already know about the dangers lilies represent to your cats; if just one doesn’t this will be worthwhile.
As spring approaches, lilies will become more common in households as potted plants or in bouquets. Unfortunately, several types of lilies can be deadly to cats. Easter lily, tiger lily, rubrum lily, Japanese show lily, some species of day lily, and certain other members of the Liliaceae family can cause kidney failure in cats.
Within only a few hours of ingestion of the lily plant material, the cat may vomit, become lethargic, or develop a lack of appetite. These signs continue and worsen as kidney damage progresses. Without prompt and proper treatment by a veterinarian, the cat may develop kidney failure in approximately 36-72 hours.
All parts of the lily plant are considered toxic to cats and consuming even small amounts can cause severe poisoning. Cat owners should be aware of the dangers of lily ingestion and remove them from their cat's access

David, do you know which species of day lilies? I have a few different ones in the garden and 3 cats, thankfully no problems so far.

Hi Roxann! The only information I've ever seen only refers to 'some' day lilies. Not being a cat owner myself, I don't really have a vested interest, although I wouldn't like to see any harm come to them even if they do pee & poo in my garden!

Mrs FA is a vet nurse. She said they see about 1 case of lily poisoning in cats per year. They very rarely eat them, but more usually they get dislodged pollen on their paws or coat and then lick it off. It's quite unusual though and with prompt action, the cats rarely die.

There was one woman who used to work with my mum who drove to work once and said she thought she'd run something over on the way to work. She thought it was either a cat or a rabbit and said that she hoped it wasn't a rabbit.
Awful woman. Despises cats.
