My sons would love a pet. First choice would be a dog, but my eldest developed an allergy last year . We're not cat people. Also we travel for approx. one weekend every six weeks. I have friends that could mind a little something for that time. Any ideas? I've thought about a bird, but hate seeing them cooped up in tiny cages, and I don't have a hug amount of space, so a proper avery is out

Tropical fish? I have a 'large' catfish atm, but the kids really like the little ones, so we may have to find room for a little community tank as well. The kids at the fish shops are always glued to the tanks and they don't need much looking after.

How about a pet rat ? Or maybe some other rodent - hamster or gerbil maybe. Actually, Mrs FA (a vet nurse) says that Guinea Pigs are lovely pets. They're not expensive to buy or keep either. Rabbits are also nice pets.

I think I'd go for a Guinea Pig . I had a couple a few years ago and they were fantastic. Very tame and very friendly! S x

Whatever it is, could I suggest two of it? I've always thought that (particularly caged) pets or fish need company... of course, sex may be an issue... and fighting... sorry...

I've thought about guinea pigs, 'cause I've had several during my lifetime. Will give it alot of thought before we decide...

Ooooo dont get a bird - hate to think of them caged up - a law should be passed against this; one day it will Next door had a rabbit - they used to leave it out in their secure garden and it had a "house" to go in at night should it wish - and when they were going on hols I wuld just throw over the odd carrot or two - it was fine - it lived to a good age too jenny x

Couldn't do that here, Jenny. My garden has foxy visitors, and is besieged by cats . Sounds wonderful, though. Hate to have any animal cooped up. Hutches sold in pet shops are tiny!
