Not at all pleased with my little cat today. I was weeding in the veg. patch when I heard her thrashing about in the adjoining hedge. I went over and watched her. She was 'playing' with something I couldn't at first see. Then, saw, it was a lovely little swallow. Managed to rescue it but it was badly injured. It later died. Cant tell you how sad I felt. For parents to have reared it and for it to have flown and then to be caught (somehow) by Holly. Not a good day. Shrub.

Oh SR, what a shame! I know they (cats) can't help it, it's natural to them, but it's heartbreaking when they kill something so beautiful. What I hate most is the cruel way they "play" with their prey and drag out the suffering. That really upsets me.

Me too nightowl. Much as I love Holly, I'd rather she wasn't such a little beast at times.

Shads has caught 2 starlings so far but both have been rescued and flown off again. He's currently sat on the sofa "talking" to the birds outside on the feeder. We moved the feeders now so he definitely can't get a swing at the birds on them.

I get the impression Aprilaydee that you're 'on to him'. I've got so used to having older cats (sadly now all gone) who liked to sit rather than play that I'd stopped using my radar at this time of year. Holly (and her sister - also no longer with us) were rescued kittens and initially didn't seem really interested in wildlife but boy has that changed. Will have to step up my game if I'm going to curb her instinct.

oh yeah I'm on to him alright LOL I moved the feeders because the first one he caught he brought in half the bush with him! He's a good cat really but the birds do a lot of walking on the ground and with the redcurrant bush now fruiting, he can wait underneath the bushes and spring up.
He knows I wouldn't be happy with him if he brought another one back (yes, I know it's nature but I'm hoping he'll love me enough to pack it in.... LOL). After the last one I gave him a telling off and he smoothed around me for about 20 minutes as if to try and get back in my good books.

I know that trick. Tail up, little mincing steps and mucho round the leggo's. Dont you just love their little ways (well, some of them!)?
