Sorry, but I need to ask this question !!
It looks like I may have let Mrs FA persuade me to get a dog. We're probably going to get a black lab but we can't decide on a dog or a bitch.
I'd prefer a bitch but I'm a bit of a slave to my lawn and I know that the wee of female dogs kills grass. Is there anything I can do that will stop the grass from dying off ? It would break my heart to see my lawns full of bare patches !
The alternative is to get a dog but obviously as got older, it would cock it's leg and pee up against the shed, playhouse, kids toys etc.
Any advice from you dog owners out there ? Can you stop a dog's urine from killing grass ?
Thanks
FA x

I have a bitch, Andy. The four legged variety!! ;D I put up with the problems she causes, which tbh are not that bad. You could take it out at set times and train it to go then, like a favourite place. I would always go for a bitch over a dog, as I keep getting told they are more friendly than a dog. Can't really comment as I have never had a dog to compare with. The thought of my dog cocking it's leg whenever it likes, like up someone else's car wheels, feels me with dread! They do this to set out their territory, for other males to watch out for!! You could get a weeing post for a dog and train it to go to that, but it depends on how much work you want to put in! Personally, I would go for a bitch and take it out regulary, especially after meals. Luckily my bitch only goes once, maybe twice a day and in the morning and not again, until the next day! This is surprising, considering she is forever drinking little amounts out of the pond, birdbath, puddles after rain, water in wheelbarrow, oh and out of her dog bowl which has clean water twice a day at least!! Her predecessor, always went last thing at night, too. Hope this helps, FA Keith

Oh FA. read the Jeffrey thread and best of luck - you will need it Thankfully Jeffrey now only visits and he's great when he doesn't live here anymore. He is a lovely dog but are you up for the walking first thing in the morning and then again at night - rain or shine? they need it or otherwise the boredom sets in and the chewing starts...........................

Don't despair FA you can train a dog to go to the loo in a certain place in the garden. It's just a matter of having the right place ready and making sure you take them to this place each time you let them out of the house to do the business. Praise them when they have done it etc etc. You will eventually get to a point that the dog will just go to that place. Sounds easy I know and you will need to persevere obviously. Good luck and don't be soft with it ;D thats where most people go wrong

Perfect lawns and woofers don't go paw in paw. I unfortunately don't have a dog, but know all about howling in the night, big slobbery "kisses" around my ear, chewed furniture etc - as I'm sure FA does with his two sprogs. Two remedies for bitches are tomato ketchup (puree or similar) or if they are not disposed to that then extract of Yucca - the juice not the spikey leaves ....now there's a thought!

Go for a girl FA! They have much nicer tummies to rub! I don't have this pee problem with my girls - one because I don't have a lawn and two because they do their business when they are out on their walks, but they do seem to go in the same places while out, boy dogs on the other hand will pee up every single object they come across LLx

Eric doesn't pee up every object he comes across. He doesn't even cock his leg because he wasn't mature when they chopped his knackers off. He's incredibly friendly and doesn't do any business where he shouldn't.
My mum has a bitch westie and they don't have any problem with their lawn either but I don't think she really goes on the lawn and she poos on the concrete mainly.
Can't you get something called Lava rocks to put in their water bowl? And I've seen some other stuff at Pets At Home that is meant to "rescue" the lawn.

I think F-A you want to really make sure you have the right home environment for a doggy You have to take into consideration the early morning toilets, the late night toilets and those awful middle of the night/morning toilets ie 3am If they want to "go" they will "tell" you and you have to get up, get out unless you want it done in the house I find my two dogs tie me down but I would not be without them I gave up a weekend away this weekend as couldnt take them with me due to my GH having a Doberman that wudnt get on with them I have had dogs and bitches and both have been loving, affectionate, clever and amusing I had a large part of my back garden paved over as the lawn got waterlogged - CLAY SOIL AND BUILDERS RUBBLE - and didnt look very nice either - maybe you could do the same Have a special paved toilet area I also buy a special Black Discinfectant for Farmers that they use in their cowsheds which has a nice fresh smell and necessary to get rid of the doggy aromas ;D Good Luck - jenny x

Dogs like eating grass (nobody knows exactly why, whether they just like it, it aids digestion or sorts out an upset tummy and so not always at set times of the day! Keith

Keith Don't worry there is plenty of grass on their walks Keith ( see walkies! thread) so no shortage if they want to eat some. April you are lucky with Eric - every time I look after my friends boy dogs they always pee up everything - all the pots in the garden, each other , every tree when we go out etc etc etc - they do all still have their knackers though ;D LLx

There ya go then LL, knackerless dogs who are knackerless before they mature around 18 months old will squat rather than cock.
He's just taken to piddling on my mum's lounge carpet at the moment when we go to visit.... How embarrassing that was! Also not like him at all as he's had no "accidents" at our house and he's been kept in for a few hours ie all night.

April, I sympathise, I think Whenever my mum or MIL bring their dogs, they ALWAYS 'leave a little gift'. Mum and MIL think it's SO amusing. I DONT. What is it with dogs?

Daughter has been round for a visit with Jeffrey, left to take him for a walk, then go home - 15 mins later they are back as he's been rolling in fox s**t again and has had to be hosed off before she can put him in the car (still want a lab FA )

Yep, post abandoned. Idea also abandoned. We're hoping to have some building work done soon and will have much more space when it's done (still waiting for bloody planning permission at the mo). I decided it was more sensible to wait until its done and then we'd have much more space for a lab (as in a type of dog, not a place where CPB works ;D).
I'm not sure what Mrs FA thinks about it. I'll let you know when she starts speaking to me again.......

Ah theres nothing wrong with little boy doggies cocking their little leggys everywhere. Iv had 6 dogs in my married life and only one of them was a bitch. I would always chose a dog over a bitch but its down to personal choice i suppose.
