As some of you will know LP is bonkers about rabbits and we've finally warmed to getting one (or two!) for her. We've invested in a huge hutch and next week will get some of the more day to day requirements.
Today I reserved a black female rabbit from a friend of a friend who breeds and has some available in a few weeks. They don't know the sex yet but there are three black ones (which is what LP now wants) and they will keep a female until we return from our holidays, if one of them is female.
The thing is that some of the stuff I've been reading says that having a pair of rabbits is better than a solitary rabbit. And that a nutered and spayed male and female pair is best. In theory that's fine because we have the space, but keeping them seperate until they can be de-sexed at about 5 months old is going to cause a bit of a problem, plus it's going to cost us about £100 when the time comes.
So do we just get the one rabbit for LP to dote on, or have two? Needless to say OH is not thinking about the pair option because of the costs!!!
HELP!!!!!!! (please!)

oh Plocket, bit of a dilemma. Rabbits are sociable creatures really, they like being around their own. I cant help thinking that from your point of view, and of course the rabbit's, two would be much more fun. Be nice to hubby, 'promise' him lots and ask him to dig deep (like rabbit's do ;D). Have you thought of taking them to the PDSA who might assist?

Two is better. We've got 2 boys (as you know). I kinda wish I'd got 2 girls though but I was advised 2 boys was better but can't remember why....
I was also advised not to have a guinea pig as they can bully the rabbit.

Hi Plocket. Have you thought about rescue rabbits. They will possibly have been done also you will know what sex you are getting. Our eldest daughter bought a pair of rabbits 2 years ago, assured they were both the same sex. One had babies so there was the added expense of another hutch etc. After having both rabbits & guinea pigs I would say GPs. Mine are sociable & small enough for little ones to handle. Even I would get scratched by the rabbits. We did have a very gentle rabbit many years ago, she was a New Zealand white but she was very big. They are bred for there coats & meat. GPs are easier to sex. Janet.

Thanks for all your answers! We've actually arranged to have one from Shugborough because it turns out a friend of ours knows the owner of the rabbits and says that they are lovely. We are just having one - OH has put his foot down! We've decided we don't mind whether we have a male or a female, and LP has said that if it's a girl it will be called Shimmer, and if it's a boy it will be Pudding (Black Pudding!!!) - and we collect it on 2nd September
