Gizmo has always preferred to drink from the bath tap - This house is the first we've had with a water softener, the sort that uses salt tablets. I've noticed when I clean my teeth that the water tastes very salty - yuk. Would it be best to stop Gizmo drinking from the bath tap - it can't be good for her to drink salty water surely?

Rita, cats know whats good and whats not. As long as Gizmo has access to a clean water supply, its her/his joice. I put fresh water down each day but the cats prefer drinking out of the puddle in the garden - their choice

I know what you mean jlottie, and I would hope that (she) Gizmo does know best. Thing is she has been drinking from bath taps, in the various houses we have lived in for 11 years and I wonder if she is doing so here because she's a creature of habit. Drinking salty water can't be good for her though. The water supply in our kitchen and utility isn't allowed to go through the water softener because it is used as drinking water, so if it's no good for us it can't be much good for Gizmo either. Both of my cats are missing drinking from the pond I had in my old garden. Tigger now drinks from an always full watering can by the back door and a watering can kept full of rainwater next to my water butts, but Gizmo will only drink from the cans when the weather isn't cold, wet or windy - she avoids going out at all costs then.

They need salt in their diets anyway Rita and as long as Gizmo can also get to un-salted water I'm sure she can work out how to balance her intake. If you are worried have a word with your vet.

I'd be interested to know what they say. Will you let us know?

The vet says not to let her drink the water from the bath tap.
