I don't know if this is the right 'section' to ask about melons...fruit goes with vegetables doesn't it? ;D Anyroadup. I've got it into my head that I would like to grow melons next year in my (unheated) GH. It's in an excellent position, gets loads of sun and gets swelteringly hot in the summer even on quite mild days. Have to leave the door open most days otherwise stuff gets burnt in there. Anyway I thought that I might be able to grow something like melons in there, does anyone have any advice? can anyone recommend a variety? or am I completely bonkers... CPBx

I grew Jenny Lind (Simpsons Seeds) this year in an unheated greenhouse and so far have about 8 fruits from two plants, so reasonable succes for me!
Don't know how to tell wether they are ripe yet though - any advice?

Exactly the same way you test shop bought melons - Press your thumb at the neck of the fruit. If it gives then it's ripe.

Good Evening dear friend! I think you could grow melons in your exemplary GH with no trouble - but they do need a long growing season - so start them off early next year. Shall we lay off the Morning Glories till March next year and do melons early instead?

In May,I put a load of my own compost in a bit of the garden, which I then ignored until last week, when I decided I had to weed it. Amongst other things (> 40 self sown verbena bonariensis, two fruiting tomatoes and a flowering pepper plant) there's a melon with 2 fruit! I'm trying to nurture it a bit now, hoping I don't exterminate it as it seems to have thrived on total neglect!

That is a CUTE melon figrat! We are growing a pumpkin plant this year thanks to Margi's seedling who gave us, well, the seedling! Loads of the fruits have dropped off but there's one forming now, perhaps too late to be suitable for Halloween, but it's a fruit nonetheless (or are they vegetables?). And there's another flower!

I'm trying Cantaloupe melons this year in a plastic growhouse - it's a bit crowded but I have two melons a bit bigger than a tennis ball - I doubt if they will ripen and it does seem a lot of effort for little harvest - but I'm glad I tried.
