This year, like a lot of others apparently, our runner beans got off to a very slow start. At the time I put it down to the fact that I was using last years seeds, they were really spindly, refused to grow round the canes and barely held their own against the slugs. We made two sowings, but the second was the same as the first. In late May we got some new seed, Scarlet Emperor, this time, and they really worked well, we are getting lots of beans. However, I find that even when young they are quite rough skinned. Last year, in passing, I picked up a pot of runner bean seedlings from a garden centre, they had no name label so I've no idea what they were, but they were magnificent. They grew like a jungle and cropped like mad, and their skins, whilst not completely smooth, were not rough. Has anyone any ideas what they might have been?

Hi
The variety most popularly sold in garden centres is 'Streamline' - this is smoother that most, with quite a wide & flat pod.
