I have two Aubergine plants left after giving away the rest, but they are only just beginning to flower... beautiful flowers btw, but my question is, isnt it too late in the season for any success?... shame if it is , because the ones I gave away are fruiting really well Im growing them in the greenhouse so they are well sheltered and have been feeding them tomato food since the buds appeared.

Hellooo, there might be time for some fruits to grow if the weather's kind. Maybe if you only let one or two set so the plants could concentrate on them...I've got several in my greenhouse which are only just starting. Baby aubergines cost a fortune. don't they?

Hello 4P , do you think the excessive heat in July held them back or should I have fed them before now, i`ve been treating them like toms, are they more hungry than I thought? Even if they dont do well I want to try them again next year so any tips will be useful!

i sowed my Black Beauty's late (20th May) and the flowers are only just starting now (but still tight buds).
I'm going to keep them going as long as possible just to see how far they will go. I've got five in the big g/h all only about 3' high but nice and healthy looking. i just hope we get some more sun !

How about an Aubergine trial next year, I failed miserably in my Poly Tunnel this year, so perhaps if we all start together we will find out all the pitfalls together.

i'm up for that ! mine were a bit of an after thought.
i actually spotted some lilac today, so i've been talking nicely to them and cut down the top two foot of sweetpeas to let a bit more light in.
i'm not giving up hope just yet.

Good Idea Jlottie, which seeds do you think we should try? I used up all mine, they germinated easily..too easily... I gave away loads! All suggestions welcome.

Hi Sweetleaf, Perhaps someone has been succesful and can give us some advice on a few varieties so we dont "put all our eggs in one basket" no pun intended honest JL

So how about moneymaker and Black beauty as two suggestions? I reckon I`d have room for both! I could get hold of moneymaker and share the seeds, and mrskp says she has spare Black Beauty. ;D

Hello Everyone,All I can say is DON'T grow one called Long Purple - it's useless!!! I am usually very good with aubergines but this year they are only just starting to fruit (or veg).Serves me right for changing varieties - I usually grow Black Enorma or Dusky and they are good varieties. I would join an Aubergine trial

Are we looking for indoor or outdoor varieties or shall we try both?, taking into account I don't have a lot of spare room in the garden and the lottie is dry as a bone, I have some large pots which I can squeeze outside somewhere though.

Sorry Mrskp we will definitely have to take our location into account - down in Cornwall we can grow a lot more outside if it sheltered.

I've only just caught up with this thread so here's my twopennorth: I've grown aubergines in my polytunnel for about 10 years and have never had a problem with them setting fruit or growing and not many pests either. This year I thought I'd be clever and grow all my tomatoes in my PT instead of the GH in tubs in the greenhouse.(I was getting loads of problems with blossom end rot). So this year I planted aubergines in 18" tubs filled with mixture of goat muck, compost and grow bags and I have had a really bad year with them. I have had quite a few fruits but they were much later then usual, they're very slow to ripen and they seem to be much more pest ridden. I'm surprised that they didn't seem to get on better with the higher temperatures this summer and next year I shall put them back into the ground in my PT. I didn't feed them as I never do - they had really good stuff in the tubs I thought anyway. I've never given them any supplementary feeding before. I don't know if makes any great contribution to the debate but there you are! Oh and they were "Black Beauty".
