Oh and I'm growing catmint/nip too which our cat wasn't bothered with until last night where he sat with his head stuck in the plant for 15 minutes licking the leaves... weird animal.
I've got young plants of sage, dill, basil, thyme and sweet marjoram going well too.

. And I have peppermint essential oil which I'm sure the latin name for is mentha piperita, doesn't chocolate mint have something else after it? I know spearmint is mentha spicata... Anyway, it's along the right lines lol I think chocolate mint is a cultivar of Mentha piperita

I looked up chocolate mint! The name is mentha piperata f.citrata "chocolate". Still haven't found anyone in France that sells it. I did get a catalogue with 18 different mints and fancy "eau de cologne". Does anyone grow it? Is it good to eat or just to sniff?

Hi toonia, I've just found this interesting link via Google.fr for an aromatic plants garden in Limoux. They don't seem to have the 'Chocolate' variety, but they say that they can often provide information on alternative suppliers. www.labouichere.com/e/index.htmMight be worth a look. Oh, and no, I'm not bilingual, the site has an English (and German) translation! Spruance

Aprilaydee, I've just found your reference to the magical properties of herbs and am very interested. I really enjoy finding out about the folk beliefs of herbs - I find them quite sensible really! I'd love to hear more about what you use them for. I promise I won't laugh - I love all that sort of stuff!

I used to have a rosemary bush by the door in our old house and the Pongster used to brush against it on his way in and out -he smelt lovely in those days! I put a scented leaf geranium by the door here but it hasn't worked! Spruance, will check out the site immediately, thanks for the research! Still can't get the picture of you in your gardening shorts and lathered with lavender oil out of my head though.....

well 4P, everything I know about them I've read in a few books. I mainly use essential oils but I'm drifting more towards herbs as well now I have somewhere to grow them! I've been making up my little concotions to put in my oil diffuser at the moment as I have a cold brewing :-(
I have a book called the Wicca Bible which has some info on herbs for magickal use but I mainly just browse the net for any further info I require. Abbey Botanicals website has some interesting herbs and gives some details of their uses.
It's quite interesting really reading the books about how we use plants as many things we do for different reasons are done because of an old belief. We lost the knowledge but remembered the symbolism.
Anyway, best get back to planting the other 10p's worth of my pansies out... cor it's windy out there!!
