This is my first year with veg. I've made a couple of raised beds. Is there anything I could sow now?

Garlic! If you put it in soon you'll have a lovely crop come next June (ish). I didn't have time last autumn and planted it much later and as a consequence they were all much smaller than usual (but still lovely). Broad beans, and there's still time to buy some brassicas to plant out to overwinter if you haven't got a nursery bed. If you have something like a cloche you can also sow some of the more exotic lettuces too.

Just nipped to the local GC to get my garlic cloves for planting only to be told that they have sold out. For Heaven's sake! It just confirms my prejudice that the people who run these places are not gardeners. Apparently they're not ordering any more as "there isn't much call for that sort of thing"!! Obviously they're aiming for the plastic flowers, concrete and BBQ section of the market. Grrr.

I know what you mean 4P, I asked for carrot seeds at the beginning of July and they said that no-one plants carrot this late, so they had thrown out the old stock......... I know it was going to be a late-ish planting but, it was most definitely not too late! They cant give me garlic, onion sets or strawberry plants either as theres just "no call"

No, that's right but if you buy the proper cloves from the GC you are supposed to get better size bulbs. I have read that shop garlics are sprayed too. I shall have to use Tesco's finest I suppose but I haven't been to my little independent nursery yet - I bet she would order some for me. Fancy throwing away old seeds! That's just silly. I got 43 packets of free seeds from my GC earlier this year as they were getting near their sell by date. I was only supposed to have one (per customer) but I know the check out lady pretty well! At least my GC didn't just dump them. Eeh, the waste, the waste......

Dobies still haven't sent my garlic yet if you wanted to order on-line (probably so many of us do order on-line that the GCs feel there is no longer a need). www.dobies.co.uk

We have the seeds most of the year round I think? I was browsing our seed section a few days ago and I'm sure there were carrot seeds, not sure about garlic but there were other veg such as runner beans and salad collections.
I find it incredible that they would just throw the seeds out. Even if they were past their best before date I'm sure we would stick them in the clearance section for a silly price. They're not that expensive anyway...
