I'm still waiting for the hulms to died down on my pink fir apples, they are showing no sign of it yet, are still growing in fact, is it an old wives tale, shall I dig them any way?

I've always dug some 'prematurely' if only because I can't wait. I've formed the opinion over the years that for max yield you wait; for max novelty you dig.
There is another encouragement to 'go early': if you've ever grown in containers and loose compost rather than soil, you'll have known the illicit thrill of rootling about and plucking a few 'for tasters' very early. It never seems to hurt the plant...
Go on, live a little - dig one up and have a look!
