Hi all.
My OH purchased a small fig tree last month. I do not know the variety. It has already set fruit!
WoooooooooHoooooo! We have two figs on this little two ft. tall tree!
Any suggestions on how best to care for the tree? I have brought it inside for the winter last week. When do we harvest our crop?
Thanks for any advice.

Hi CD3, there seems to be various permutations with fig trees according to how remote from "ideal" the climate is - they may set one two or three "figlets" in succession, each taking their turn to mature...or not - and it's these you need to protect these from frost.
If you extend the season by bringing it in out of the worst cold you may see better results, but I think only a season or two's ownership will allow a pattern to develop and then you can dream about reliable supplies... and if it's any encouragement, the ones I regularly see at a friend's place in SW France get creasing winter temperatures followed by long hot summers and they crop really heavily. They're in the ground of course - you are going to end up with one big plant if you keep it in a pot - have you a sheltered south facing wall you could plant it against to save lugging it around?

Thanks for the link, Rita! I'm not sure if that is the variety I have. The tag only said: "Italian Fig." Another reason to grumble about the non-use of the proper scientific names, ehh?!?!? I'm not looking to put any fig producers out of business with competition from me ... just a fun thing to grow like a Coffee Tree and getting all excited that we get 4 fruits! LOL! (How pathetic is that? Hi OM and thank you too for taking the time to answer my figgy question. We just got the trees (2) in August and one set fruit soon afterwards. Our temperatures can get to - 15 ° F to -20° F in a very harsh winter. I'd be too afraid the trees would perish if left outside. Right now they are quite a manageable size so it isn't too bad to carry them in. Thanks for all the information! I'll take some pictures and post them a little later. C3D and 2 figs

I have a Brown Turkey fig in a clay pot by my front door and for the first time I had over 10 figs ripening. They were doing really well until suddenly overnight a week ago all the figs vanished! Can't find any of them on the ground so something has eaten them and now all the leaves have dropped off the plant too ready for winter. So disappointing! Hope you have better luck!
