Hi all,
over the weekend I read about a new 'dwarf' apple tree; it apparently only grows to 5 ft, and can live happily in a large container. We don't have room for any fruit trees in the open ground, so this sounds like an ideal solution - but I wanted to check whether anyone has had experience growing 'dwarf' fruit trees? Presumably they've been treated with some sort of retardant/dwarfing agent, and I'm a bit iffy about that (given that we'd want to eat the resulting fruit). Any thoughs appreciated ... cheers ...

Hi CC its more likely that its been grafted to a dwarf rootstock so the fruit wont be affected just the final height If you tell us what its called it can be looked into. ;D

Hi Sweetleaf ... it's called 'Coronation' and, according to the article, the whole point is that it is NOT grafted onto dwarf rootstock - the tree itself is a dwarf, if that makes any sense ... cheers ...

What was the article published in CC? I had a little google and the only coronation apple I found was produced in 1902, so obviously not that then, you have me intrigued, I need to read about it.

Hi Sweetleaf - I'll have to root through the weekend papers; it was either the Sunday Tribune or Irish Times weekend supplement, and said that this new dwarf had been bred (developed?) here in Ireland ... will get back with further details ... cheers ...

I know it's few weeks ago now canarycreeper but did you ever find the article. I've just found this and wondered if this was anything to do with it.

Hi guys....i was just about to start a new thread when i saw this.
I'm looking to buy a couple of fruit trees this spring to go on the patio in large pots. I'd like a cherry and maybe a pear. We've got some at work for £20 each but i'm not too sure whether restricting them to pots will stop them fruiting as they should.
Any suggestions would be welcome
Andy
