Hi all,
I recently got some seeds for salsify with very poor instructions (Lidl), and I haven't found much in my herb books - any tips on how best to cultivate this? Thanks and cheers ...

Thanks Chuckles aka BusyBee - I saw this myself while hunting the net, but not sure it is the same variety - I guess I'll just bung them in and hope for the best! Cheers ...

I grew them one year CC and just sowed them in April (I think) straight in to a drill outside. They did alright but I was the only one who liked them so I've never grown them again......my lot seem to be fairly traditional!

Are these similar to Scorzonera? If so I have a pack waiting to be sown.
Scorzonera Russian Giant
Sow April/May harvest Oct to Feb Sow thinly in warm moist soil 1/2 to 3/4" deep in rows about 15" apart. Grows bestin soil not recently manured otherwise forked roots occur (similar to carrots??)
Sowing to Cropping 26-28 weeks, germination 8-21 days.
It may or may not help you if Scorzonera isn't very similar to Salsify.
Thanks Paul

Thanks, Paul - yes, that sounds like it. According to the picture on the pack, broad leaves like baby hostas - now that can't be bad while you're waiting for the crop! ... cheers ...
