Has anyone grown Santa toms before? I've really enjoyed them when I have bought them so thought I would try growing them this year. T&M have them on offer for 99p plus lots of other seeds at 49p - so I have just spent another fiver on seeds me bad! LLx

Santa is one of the 'Trials' toms - so if you do try them and even if you don't get deeper into the suggested varieties, please open a thread to record your tom-growing progress.
The new Trials 'sub' board (a bit like "my garden/allotment") will open soon in the Garden Gallery - so whenever you feel like sowing and starting your own thread as a diary, get in there!

Now I purposely didn't look at the trials thread just so that I wasn't tempted to buy anymore seeds - hopeless aren't I? I will check to see if there is anything else on there that I already have as I REALLY mustn't buy any more seeds! LLx

I didn't select any of the 'trial' items as I (purposely) try not to buy from the big seed suppliers (everything seemed to be T&M, Fothergills etc). I was just wondering if I'd still be able to join in, even though my seed is from elsewhere? I'm quite happy to compare how mine do. I also have 'Harbinger', I know that isn't part of the trial either but it is a damn fine tomato!!

Absolutely, GH... the varieties were chosen to offer the broadest choice of availability, growing circumstances and interest, and the spirit (since they're hardly new varieties, in the main) is to allow us to compare notes - so go ahead, preferably with something broadly comparable, and post your progress too!

I've never tried Santa. I'm thinking about trying some heirloom seeds, Principe Borghese and Black Krim. I have also decided to try San Marzano. Has anybody tried these or has ordered heirloom seeds from the U.S? I understand that Principe is excellent for drying and San Marzano is good for tom sauce and ketchup. Is Santa a salad tomato?

Santa is a salad tomato, elongated grape-like fruit which are sweet and tangy - worth a go!! San Marzano is also one of my favourites, you can use it for tomato sauce. I also like it roasted with olive oil, garlic and thyme. Grew Black Krim a few years back - more for the fun of growing a black tomato!! It had a good flavour but I thought it abit 'watery' for my liking, I think I ended up using it as a basis for stocks and sauces, hence not grown it again. I've not ordered Heritage Tomatoes from the US as there are a few good companies in the UK, have a look at these links.... www.podseeds.co.uk/www.simpsonsseeds.co.uk/www.organiccatalog.com/catalog/GH

Thank you all. I've never seen Lost, though we do take advantage of lying in Astra's footprint and freeview. The name is one I picked up after sinking the narow boat I lived on in 1982, only two weeks after I had bought it. My mistake concerned the "weedhatch". I was rescued by seasoned boat dwellers and fell in with their community. They were all darlings and I learnt much. This communty feels much the same, only I've got more room here and it doesn't rock so much, but I'm sure I'm going to learn a lot. Thank you again.
