Most of my veg will be grown in containers. As I'm sat here 'planning', I'm asking myself; what depth of containers will Spring Onions Sporting Lisbon and Lettuce Little gems perform best in? I did say it is a silly question ... but ... I don't know the answer. to anyone who can give some advice and many thanks in advance WB

Little Gems will even grow in a 5'' pot on a well watered gravel tray. I grow White Lisbon in the sort of crappy plastic troughs you get for a couple of quid from the supermarket/£2 pound shop. However, please be aware of Sporting Lisbon. It is a very troublesome crop.... Whilst unlike Benfica Onions they don't require the Stadium of Light 24/7, they can be bloomin' precocious at times. They don't train easily, bolt and run to seed, are prone to fickleness, wilt, dive and all sorts of other tricks. Best harvested when you have a "George Graham" brown paper bag you can "bung" them in <boringfootballjokesmiley>

WB, just to warn you that slugs adore Little Gem, possibly their favourite of all the lettuces ... real slug gourmet food, so make sure whatever container you choose is slug-proofed ... cheers ...

Thanks for that C.C. ~ Male and C.C. ~ Female ;D The sporting lisbon was a goof on my part CC ... been watching tooo much soccer lately. The rest were pretty good anectotes that sum up the cheating, diving potuguese onions. Chuckles ... what's so funny ?? You saying I can't show six inches? I could but would have to show it twice ... ... Mind you; in this cold weather make it 3 times ... Most of my veg will be grown in containers. I was going to ask something similar WB although I don't worry about asking stupid questions, I think it's expected of me now LOL
I'm growing carrots and onions and was going to put them into containers and it tells you how far apart to plant them but not how deep they will grow. Which isn't a problem if you're sticking them in the ground I guess.
So I'm bunging the carrots in a large deep container and sorting out another for the onions but I'll probably only be able to grow about 3 at a time unless I get some more pennies to buy lots more tubs... roll on my birthday when I can ask for either B&Q vouchers or money!
