Hi veg growers!
I'm sure many of you already know this, but for the benefit of those who don't, it's worth knowing that the single biggest cause of onions bolting (going to seed) is being planted when the soil is too cold - particularly apt at this time of year.
I haven't received my order from Marshalls yet and probably won't for another week or so (they know the best time for planting) - that's fine by me inasmuch as I shall not sow until early April.

Woops! 'Onion Sets' would have looked better.

Hi David,
You should be able to 'modify' to correct the spelling.
I've been bold. I sowed my onions at the end of January and have pricked out 55 into their own cells and stuck them in the placcy greenhouse/coldframe. When would you say the best time is to plant them?

Hi Skarloey! Thanks for the tip; Beeb habits do die hard. Onions from seed (which is what yours are I presume) are quite different, the old saying 'sow on the shortest day and harvest on the longest day' definitely applies to them. Your onion seedlings can be planted out now if they large enough, rather like a small leek plant.

I've got about 50 bulbs that are in cells at the moment, I had planted them up in the shed and they are now out hardening off. I read that "Heat Treated" sets are less likely to bolt, is that true?

Hi Paul!
That's quite true, heat treated bulbs are less likely to bolt, that's really the object of the procedure. I always grow them, although mine are planted directly outside when I receive them; late March early April.
