I'm always green with envy reading about your allottments; there are none (any more) in the Dublin City area, and those in the county area would be a couple of bus rides away, plus they have huge waiting lists. But apparently the City Council is now looking at hiving off some of the land in our big city parks for allottments. They would be 400m2, and allocated on a rota basis if demand exceeds supply. One of these parks is 5 min walk from our house ... so I'm keeping fingers and everything else crossed ;D ... cheers ...

Hi Canarycreeper!
Good luck, I hope you soon have a plot allocated to you.
I suppose I'm lucky inasmuch as I have a largish garden, so have no particular need for a lottie. Having said that, I would love to share in the community spirit that I know exists among the allotmenteers.
I do visit my local allotments regularly to buy compost, fertilizer and other stuff from the 'shed'. I'm always made to feel welcome and usually spend half the morning chatting there.

... Thanks David ... I'm sure the proposal will take at least a year to wend it's way through sub-committees etc., but I'll be waiting with trowel and fork in hand ;D ... cheers ...

Thats great news, with more and more dwellings being squeezed into smaller spaces people just don't have the room to grow veg anymore. Hope you won't have to wait ages

thanks, all ... Robin, if you see an item on the news 'mad woman waiting outside Fairview Park with tools in one hand and bag of seeds in the other' ... that's me ;D. Incidentally, you know we used to have tons of them in the city years ago? And probably also in Galway, Limerick, Cork etc. .... obviously somewhere along the line demand declined ... cheers ...

Id gladly support a mad woman standing outside Fairview Park....thankfully I have plenty of garden to be getting on with here, well more fields than garden, but wouldn't it be great.Maybe a mad woman could phone Joe Duffy(Dublin local radio show, for those overseas) and see if he could move things along for you!

I just had a strange thought....... Is there such a thing as private allotments, I have so much space that maybe I could divide it up. How far out would people travel to have an allotment?

Yes there's such things as private allotments.....not sure how you would go about setting it up. Maybe contact NSALG or your equivalent for advice.
It sounds a good idea.

That's a great idea, Robin ... it's a shame we don't have anything like NSALG here, but you could try getting on to the 'Community Initiatives' section of Galway Co. Council ... and if you have no luck there, ask at your local library and they may be able to put you in touch with any local allotment groups ... cheers ...
