Hi WB! Many thanks for your generous welcome.
Sorry to have overlooked your ‘strawberry query’, I’m sure you’ll understand how it happened - I have it in the back of my mind that you had asked me this same question a long time ago. However, I hope you don’t mind (for the benefit of others that may look in too) if I go into some detail about this problem.
The commonest diseases of strawberries are ‘Grey Mould’ and ‘Mildew’.
Grey Mould is spread by aphids spreading a fungus disease ‘Botrytis cinerea’ resulting in severe fruit loss in a wet summer. Affected berries and become covered with a brownish grey fluffy growth. As soon as the first flowers open, spray with benomyl, carbendazim or thiophanate mythyl, repeating twice at 10 to 14 day intervals. Pick off affected fruit and burn them.
Strawberry Mildew affects the fruit, causing it to lose its shine; the leaves turn purple and curl upwards showing greyish lower surfaces. Spray immediately before flowering with dinocap, repeating at 10 to 14 day intervals until 1 or 2 weeks before harvesting.
*It’s a long time since I last grew strawberries to any extent, so I feel that some of the sprays I have mentioned may no longer be available. However, replacements for them can usually be found.
