I have little mange tout 1" popping out of my raised bed and I don't know what to do with them now...........they say to do something with twigs in the gardening book but I don't really understand what they mean.advice welcome. I have also planted spuds under plastic and have cut out holes but after that .. ??when they start to grow how do I earth them up and finally how do I harvest. Do i have to remove the plastic to get at the spuds......... robin

Mange tout, mange tout said Del Boy..... ....Do you know the variety? Because their ultimate height will affect what you may support/grow them up. And if the packet said "self supporting" then that's nonsense unless you have sown a field of them. Oh and how far away have you grown each one from the other? Sorry about the questions! This year I'm growing Waverex, which co-incidentally "I've not grown veg for 20 years, but I'm an expert Carole K" grew on her veggie programme

They are termed dwarf. but in reality average......What you are looking for is "twiggy pea sticks". You can use straight bamboo canes at an angle, like a pick-up sticks game. But local wooded "bendy" material is much better.
Tomorrow, I will cut the glossy red wood of my Cornuses (Dogwoods) and use the bendy offcuts in the pea area. This also has the advantage that more Cornus will rooot ;D

Thanks and that is what I will do.........any advise on the spud front.I have secured the plastic sheet to the ground(well left over radon barrier) with metal rods ,we are in a very exposed area so I don't want to spend the summer running after it.When the spuds do start will I have to pull it all up?
