Hi all, My dad is clearing an area of his garden to put a raised veg bed. However he is planning to make one bed about 4+ metres square. I reckon he is better putting two rectangular beds with a path between, because he will have to trample over it to get to the middle. Am I right?

I agree with you Jonah, 4m square will take some trampling to get into the middle

It rather depends what he's planning on growing (in my opinion). If it just for spuds or longstanding brassicas in the middle then he'll be fine.
However, I would personally favour going down the path route so's he can reach every bit of the plot without setting foot in it even in the winter.
He would be best growing stuff that is tastier than shop stuff yet easy to grow. Or that carries a price premium/is hard or impossible to find in the shops.
An alternative depending upon how agile he is might be to place conveniently placed stepping stones at each stride across.

Stepping stones sound good CPC, or how about just laying a few boards in the places were he wants to walk, I just have an old decking board in the middle of my veg gdn and it's plenty wide enough

Well I managed to convince him to make two beds, shortly after telling him I had been asking the experts! It was also handy that the wood he thought was 4 metres long was in fact 5 metres long, so he had to cut it! OH cut them 3.5 x 1.5. He is not as agile now due to health reasons[sorry dad ] , so I think he will be better off with them narrower. Can't remember what he said he was planting, I think runner beans and carrots were mentioned up there somewhere. Thanks everyone.
