I think I may have a problem with pea and bean weevil on the lottie a lot of the leaves have been munched - my book says to spray with permethrin ? I don't really want to spray with anything - any one got any alternatives or tips?

I had the same trouble last year LL and wish I had sprayed earlier. I don't like using chemicals but sometimes there doesn't seem any other option

So far mine are untouched, It seems that treated seed does better although not the organic route. Our local farmers store only sells treated seed, now I know why

Are you sure it is not birds eating your peas? only things that eat mine are Sparrows, i counteract that by streching a single strand of BLACK THREAD, tied to a stick at each end of the row, about 6ins above the peas, they cant see black thread so when they touch it,it scares them off, works a treat.

If they are as you put it 'being munched' I would say it is birds so nets are the best bet.
If the edges of the leaves are like someone has gone around with a pair of pinking shears then this is the pea/bean weevil and generally they do not do any major damage to the plant so just accept it.

Thanks Teegee! It looks like pinking shears have been used around the edges - as long as I still get peas I'll forgive them!

We went down to the allotment this evening to do some weeding and after reading this thread this morning, I think mine are being munched too. I will wait and see how my peas get on in the next couple of weeks (they are pea, Kelvendon Wonder). I still have dwarf french beans and Pea Early Onward growing in the greenhouse, but they need hardening off before I will plant them. Lottie Lady, the link you gave was good so maybe when these are planted I will cover them for a few weeks until they are sturdy enough the handle the little beasties!

Hi folks!
You'll need to spray with fenitrothion and hoe regularly around the plants from now until the end of May.
