Well it really felt like I was Jack with my own beanstalks growing heavenwards - they had to go out yesterday! I have made a couple of wigwams for them to grow up, one from mountain ash prunings and the other from canes. There is a photo on my garden thread for anyone interested They were covered with fleece last night, but I am risking it tonight as no frost is forecast. I will cover them if it is though. Mother spud is still producing so if the first lot fail I should still have more slips to plant out later.. Updates will follow

Mine has not grown since the middle of March, it only has the 1 shoot which is about an inch high, cant figure out what has gone wrong with it? I'm not bothered though as I have lots of other things to keep me going. Well done Tig I think this year will be the best for Sweet Spuds outside (fingers crossed).

Just in case anyone is still interested, the five I have left are growing quite well and starting to twine themselves around the canes (with a little help )

Just been reading up about these but you probably know this already. It says they need deep fertile soil and are best grown in earthed up ridges, they need lots of water and you can sink cut off plastic bottles in the ground to help get water down to the roots. Also a feed every 2/3 weeks.

I think mine should be wearing life jackets with all the rain we've had! I am giving them a liquid feed every other week. They do grow better in mounds of well rotted manure and compo, but mine just have to make do with what they've got At this rate it won't have been warm enough for them to grow much root I reckon. They do like it hot and sunny

Last years trial was once again rubbish!! Nothing edible at all, too small. I reckon we need a really warm summer to do any good with them Anyway, if anyone is thinking of giving this a go now is the time to be planting your Mummy spud in her own pot on a warm windowsill. Just a reminder for those who are adventurous x Tig

Tig are you still using the same spud? Mine is in the GH potted up so I shall fetch it into the house today where its warmer. It had leaves on it right up to Christmas then I cut them off. We shall see if it does anything when its a bit warmer. I plan to plant some slips in the GH border just a little trial but if it looks like we shall get a Summer then I may try some outside as well.

I ditched mine from last year Carolann - but if yours is still growing and producing 'slips' it should be OK. I reckon you stand a better chance with them in the GH, they like rich soil so if you've got any muck you can dig in first all the better! I really hope we have a better summer, but I am giving it a miss this year - I am going to grow more peas and beans x Tig

I dunno...I have no idea even what sort of garden she has atm......I don't think she has a clue how ambitious she is being....everyone else is talking about growing lettuce, a few peas, maybe some potatoes etc etc....she came in and insists that's all she wants to grow! It'll be interesting anyway..... ;D

I gave up trying, just didn't get enough heat to get them to a decent size Cheery. Think we would need a really long, hot summer (whatever those are : x Tig
