I've managed to get my cranberry jelly, chutney and mustard made this afternoon and I feel rather proud of myself!! But can anyone else suggest nice gifts I can make rather than buy, and it must be things that keep!
Many thanks!

Years ago, when I was a little girl, I used to make peppermint creams for my Grandad...........don't know if he every liked or ate them but, he was always extremely grateful! I used to decorate old jam jars to put them in....what a little angel I was!!

You can make ornamental wreaths from salt dough, they last a long time if varnished ;D
A friend of mine usd to sell jars of "Pickled bums" they were actually cotton wool balls covered in old tights with one stitch in them, arranged in a jam jar and trimmed over the lid with gingham! I laughed like a drain when I saw one in her kitchen, next to jars of preserves.

OMG Susie THANK YOU! I used to make peppermint creams too - LP can make some for her teachers! I had her decorating the fabric circles to go on the jars today - she loved it! AND I've got just the dishes to put them in.
Hey now there's an idea Sweetleaf - that's another thing LP can get involved in - thank you!

I made marzipan hearts (home-made marzipan with pistacios (sp?)) last year which were delicious - it'll be nice to do something different. And mum always does truffles!

PML! I've just seen it Sweetleaf!!!!! They sound fabulous but I'm not sure I can be bothered. A jar of them would be fairly lightweight to post though!!!
I don't remember putting condensed milk in peppermint creams Susie - I'm going to have to check the recipe now!!!

I used to made peppermint creams with my daughter too, she loved it and the sticky mess she left everywhere. ;D As I remember the recipe it was icing sugar, egg white and peppermint oil I did have moulds for making my own chocolates too, I would fill them with raisins soaked in brandy; marzipan; an almond - can't remember what else I'd fill them with The greatest success I had was making my own easter eggs, really easy too. I'd fill them with sweets and put sugar flowers on the outside to form the initial letter of the child it was for

Peppermint Creams:-
450 g icing sugar (sieved) 1 x 196g sweetened condensed milk Half tsp peppermint essense Quarter tsp green food colouring (optional, for half the mix)
Mix sugar into milk until smooth, add the essense and divide mixture in half. Add colouring to half mixture. Roll out to about 6mm thick and then cut into shapes of your choice.
Leave to set on greaseproof paper dredged in icing sugar the dip into melted chocolate!
This is the recipe I used as a child...yummy yummy!!

Plocket it sounds as if you & LP have a lovely time baking etc. It takes me back to when my girls were little. We used to make PCs, rum truffles & cherries soaked in brandy & dipped in chocolate. Yummy. I also used to make my own Black Forest Gateaus & cheese cakes along with the mincemeat. BTW I have a lovely recipe for mincemeat cake. It keeps for ages & tastes better for it, goes lovely with cheese & makes a light alternative to xmas pud. Janet.

It gets a bit stressful at times Janet but we have great fun cooking! And cooking things together has progressed what LP will eat - she's more likely to try something if she's helped to cook it!!!
Could you post the recipe for the mincemeat cake? I've got a jar and was going to make mincepies but the cake might be different. Thanks!
