My children spent the day at their Dads yesterday. They told me they had roast dinner for lunch, with cow. I thought that was absolutely hilarious

Oh well, at least unlike most children, they know that beef isnt just that stuff you buy, wrapped in cellophane at the local supermarket!

It does sound funny though Trunkyjo! It's a bit like calling chickens hens I suppose.
Mind you for a few years my dad would (each year) buy half a cow from a local farmer. He'd wind me up by reminding me we were eating Daisy, or Buttercup, or whatever name dad thought up at the time!!!

In supermarkets here, beef is male cow, usually calves bred for meat and slaughtered young. Meat sold as génisse is female as in heifer though less common. They make the distinction between male and female pheasant and venison too as well as giving the type of the latter - roe, fallow etc - as it makes a difference to the cooking technique and times.
