We have a small tesco in our own town which has everything we need. I usually go there every sunday morning without fail. The doors open for browsing/trolly filling at 9.30 am and checkouts open at 10. But today, i decided to go to Asda. There's a pretty big Asda in Brighton which sells clothes etc but every time i go there, i end up buying far too much such is the value of the shop. Went in today with only £50 cash in my pocket...no cards and no back up if it goes over the 50. Well....i got a trollyfull of just about everything i needed for the week, a complete roast dinner, stuff for kids for school and loads more....for £48 I'm going back to Asda next week ;D

Hi Andy
Tesco is the closest (2mins from work on my way home). I do use it for things I run out of but I prefer Asda as I can get everything I need in one go even if it means a 20 minute journey to get there. And for a change I go to Sainsbury's.
I buy all my meat from a local butcher and my eggs come from down the road - I like to know where it all comes from.

roxann....i'd love to buy my meat from a butchers but i'm not too sure what to buy or how much it would cost in comparison to supermarket meats. There's only me and the wife who eat it....the kids tend to have pies rather than meat on sundays so i'd only get a small amount...a medium chicken lasts us for 3 days !!!!!

Andy, my local butcher has counter of prepacked meat too (great for sticking in the freezer) so you don't have to ask for anything if you are not sure.

Andy
Pop into yur local butchers and just say 'I want to cook Blah Blah for 2 people, what cut of meat/amount would you suggest', most buthcers are really helpful. My local one has a sign up saying where all the meat has been reared and where it was slaughtered and when it was slaughtered - I don't know of any supermarket that does that!!!!!. He has started sourcing 'different' local meats - Venison, Goat, Mutton as well as game birds. And he even makes his own pies, cornish pasties, quiche, scotch eggs!!!!!!!!!
I grow my own veg and buy from a farmers market.
I must be the only woman who hates Supermarket shopping - I do go to Sainsbury for 'essentials' like Gin/Beer/Olive Oil/Loo Rolls!!!!!!!.

It all depends on what I want! And I think each supermarket differs depending on the management, for example we used to live near a grotty Sainsburys and the Tescos was great. Now we have an awful Tescos, a reasonable Asda and an excellent Sainsburys. There's also Waitrose slightly further away and we've got a little Somerfields on our estate. If I want a cheap basic shop I go to Somerfields, and also there for the fresh basics during the week. For a big specific shop I go to Sainsburys because I know they have pretty much everything I want, and I rarely shop at Tescos or Asda. For specialist shopping we go to Waitrose but it usually ends up fairly expensive because they have some very tempting stuff. And we try and buy our meat from our local butcher.

I actually HATE supermarkets - but I shop there cos it is convenient....for the heavy stuff, bottled water, etc - but mostly I go to M & S It takes me quite a while as I read the ingredients on everything I buy and avoid stuff with E numbers and too many chemicals I mostly buy Organic food I pop into local butchers and farm shops when I pass any locally, difficult when you have a 9:5 job and try to buy British food as much as possible I havent been into my "local" Waitrose yet - keep meaning to but it is about 25 mins drive away - I think it came out as Number One in Supermarkets recently

We mainly do a weekly shop at Morrisons for basics, Tesco garage just on the edge of town has a mini smkt we use in the week. Meat mainly from Butcher, eggs from local farm. Makro for Loo Roll, wash powder, Fab conditioner, dishwasher tabs, bleach, Olive Oil all big sizes/packs. Good old Wilco's for bathroom stuff and cleaning products.

Sadly my nearest Waitrose is in Harrogate (about 45 mins away) so I don't go there very often . M&S however is slap bang in the middle of the city and I do use it abit like a 'corner shop' (always nipping in for a pint of milk and coming out with chocolate profiteroles!!!!!)

I hate supermarket shopping too GH, I did try on line shopping but it took so long to go through everything. I bulk buy all my soappowder, cleaning stuff and pet food from Mole Valley (a farmers supply shop), and I can pick up my compost and most things for the garden/lottie there as well at very reasonable prices

I ordered a turkey and crown roast from our local butcher t'other year......turkey was fine BUT crown roast was inside oot! Had to dismantle and re do. tee hee....meat was nice though.

We have a very good local butcher less than 10 minutes walk away, although all of our beef is bought from my boss's longhorn beef farm - Meridian Meats - and very good it is too. Supermarket-wise, there is a big out of town Tesco on the opposite side of town to us, and also an equally large Asda on the edge of the town centre. Unfortunately, these are both virtually off limits at the moment due to the closure - for two months - of one of the main through routes due to laying of new gas pipes. Consequently cross-town traffic delays/jams are horrendous. Fortunately, there is a branch of Netto, just 5 minutes away on our side of town, thank goodness!

Asda, I lurrrrrrrrrrve asda. I know where things are, I know they're mostly cheaper and I know they sell what I like. Everytime I go to tescos I'm disappointed so I only use it for a few things now although where I'm moving to it'll be by nearest supermarket. Still drive to asda methinks.

I like Asda. We take our youngest daughter once a month. She is on a very tight budget as her OH has not been able to work for nearly 2 years. Her christmas shop came to £94. Last month we were looking at houses with them & as there wasn't an Asda she said she would just get enough for the week from Sainsburys. It came to £40. We can only drink rice milk & Asda is the only shop to stock the one I need. Janet.

Everywhere (feels like...) When we had a car we went to Tescos every week and I'd spend a fortune. Nowadays (even with my soopadoopa shopping trolley) I tend to do it in dribs and drabs when I'm walking through town on my way home from work...there's a small Sainsbury's in the town centre...we also have a mini Tescos just around the corner from where we live... I go to Leicester Market for fruit & veg sometimes but a lot of the local fresh produce traders are going out of business because of the big local supermarkets....a lot of stalls that used to sell fine foods have been taken over by people selling tat! We have a fine fish market here which I use a few times a month....I get fresh 'free range' chickens from a farm shop (when I can get my sister to take me there)...I get my bacon from M&S & occasionally buy beef there too.... ;D

Did you know, read this in Prima, that all the expensive produce is placed at eye level and the more cheaper brands, which are just as good, are placed on the bottom shelf
Checked this out in Tesco on Monday - and true - saved £2 on some cleansing milk - Garnier no less - so a well known brand

I shop mainly in Sainsbury's as it is next door to where I work. We don't have a car but when I go shopping with my Sister we shop in Waitrose and M & S as well I prefer to buy my meat from a local butcher, though
