Go easy on me here. Recently we have been having problems with getting consistency in boiled eggs. Every Sunday I do 7 for the family. Always done the same way. Eggs placed in same pan with cold salted water, boiled on same ring and left to simmer for 4 minutes. Then they are drained and cold water poured over them. We always buy the same grade and always from Tesco, but recently some come out part boiled and some come out hard. I know part of the problem is size difference, within the grade, but when we went out recently we saw various gadgets to help with boiling eggs. Has anyone tried these or have any other advice to give to what appears to be a silly question. My wife is a very good cook, but she sometimes has the same problem as well. I time it on my countdown timer on my watch and as stated always use the same ring on the cooker. I know some of it depends on what the hens were fed on, but I just want consistency. A bit like football refs!!! ;D Please don't laugh at this question as it seems so easy, boiling eggs for Chr**t's sake!!

hia Madon!
OH uses a perspex looking egg shaped gadget which is red inside and apparently changes colour depending on how you want your egg.
I don't bother with gadgets but have the eggs at room temperature before putting into boiling water and simmering for 3 1/2 minutes. If you take the smallest egg out first the others will continue cooking while you are serving up.
I'm going to take this opportunity to announce a FIRST in our family yesterday. LP actually ASKED for a boiled egg for breakfast, and ate it without fussing. She's always been a bit wary of eggs and has tried boiled ones before - but this time she wanted one ;D

How long do you give the larger ones on average? I put in cold water and bring to the boil, as I find it helps with eggs breaking in the pan. How long does it take for the eggs to come to room temperature? Keith

It probably is a bit hit and miss Madon but I try and find eggs of similar size, and I think it's a bit hit and miss even with the gadget. It's best to leave the eggs out overnight to reach room temperature and then they rarely crack, but you have to put them into the water slowly, not drop them in ;D

Do you mean one of these Plocket? Keith I couldn't boil an egg in a pan to save my life - I use an electric egg cooker similar to this

Yes that's what OH uses! Your gadget looks pretty good though - I might have to get one of those for OH for his birthday!

Like your gadget, Rita. Only thing when little Stephen grows a bit more we would need 8 spaces!!!! Or just do it in two shifts!! 7 is perfect for us now though. I don't understand, what the problem is now, though. When I was a young teenager, I had no problems with boiling eggs, but then again they were fresh eggs from the farm!! As my Dad said then, you knew what the hens were being fed on.

It's not daft. I've never actually managed to cook a boiled egg lol Everytime they're either under cooked or minging cos they're over cooked. Sounds daft dunnit?!

Well it certainly ain't as simple as some people make out!! I find it easier to cook a 3 course meal with all the trimmings than boiling an egg. Last summer our egg salads all just turned to salads after numerous failed attempts. Scrambled, poached and fried no problem. Boiled now off the menu.
