just ordinary cake mix stuck into cake bases LOL
My gran's recipe was 2oz of soft butter, caster sugar, SR flour and 2 medium eggs. I think that's it anyway. I always forget everytime I come to bake them (like I'll be doing on Sunday)...
Cream the sugar and butter together and then add the eggs (I do it one by one) and make sure they're mixed thoroughly so they don't curdle. Then I sieve in the flour and mix thoroughly again to get air into the mixture.
Fill cake base things about half full (ish). I preheat oven to gas mark 4/180 degrees C and leave in oven until they've risen/browned and when you want to test they're done, slide a skewer/sharp knife into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean, it's done. Don't open the oven door to early otherwise they'll sink.
Others on here are probably better experts. Hope that was what you needed anyway. I'm not the best at cakes but they come out nice and edible so that's all I care about ;D

They are nice though, they're chocolate cake with chocolate icing.
I can give you a website that gives recipes for other flavours of cakes if you like? You can still make them as fairy cakes but they taste different. Then again, are fairy cakes meant to be just plain?
Oooooooh you could make angel cakes by cutting out the top centre bit, cutting that in half and putting butter icing in the hole and arranging the cut cake back on top. They're nice.
Aaaaaaaaaand you could use food colouring to make them more interesting. Make them pink. Or black... or blue... or green.... ooooooooh the possibilities!
