As we have a spare bedroom, we thought we'd earn a bit of extra dosh and get a foreign student. This would also help my daughter to understand other cultures etc. So on tuesday, we got our first student....a lovely 16 year old Japanese girl. We were very nervous and she was visibly shaking. Now we are well aware of the Japanese culture and how they don't like upsetting their hosts, especially when it comes to food. So far, we've had stirfried chicked in teriyaki sauce with new potatoes and pasta salad, Pizza and last night we had bangers and mash. All the above seemed to be a success except the mash which she didn't like. Tonight, i'm going to do a nice curry....not spicy and tomorrow it might be fish and chips. So what else would you cook for the poor lass. I'll probably do a pasta bake and i hope to get a barbeque in too. Ideas please inspiration please And if anyone has any tips on Japanese students, please feel free to share them

Andy
I don't know the first thing about students, Japanese or otherwise, but I do take my hat off to you for giving it a try, and I hope that the whole family learns something from the experience.
Why don't you ask her what she'd like to eat and take it from there!

Thanks GH....she doesn't speak the best of English.....she nods her head and says "no" and shakes her head and says "Yes" ;D.....we're getting there now....got a curry tonight so we'll have to see if she likes it. She's a good kid....painfully shy and polite and probably a bit disgusted at the antics of a beer swilling, smelly feet, dodgy farting Englishman

Wow Andy what a step to take, and what an experience for you and your family. As GH said I think you are going to have to try and talk to her. Do you have a recipe book that you can show her pictures from - she can then point out what she might like to eat. It sounds as though she likes chicken and vegetables so I'm sure there are lots of ways you can serve them up, but it might also be an idea to try her out on more traditional British food - she is here to learn after all And stop beer swilling and farting!!!!! ;D

Yep....good old traditional English food it is...curry tonight ;D, fish and chips take away tomorrow and a good old roast on sunday.
I must admit that having a student is a pleasure. I love Asian people anyway, they're very friendly and i adore their culture.
Anyway...better go as she's back now

If the long string of aupairs we had a few years back is anything to go by, and taking into account your interest in cooking as evidenced by your posts here, I wouldn't try too hard, but as Plocket says, maybe up the 'trad British fare' just a tad...
For most students it's our way of life they're interested in - so carry on as normal. Except the farting.
Expect homesickness to kick in about week three and reserve some special diversion for that.
Mind you, we had it easy - all Scandinavians... not much difference in culture there... except a lack of reindeer meat in Tesco's.
OM.

Probably best not to take her to a match if she's painfully shy!!

Probably best not to take her to a match if she's painfully shy!! even though it would be a good way to learn our language--

Yes, but do you want her learning the rather "ripe" language often heard at football matches? LOL

Only looked at this because the menu said, "Help, we've got a stud.."!! ;D ;D (that stirred my interest!) ;D I know very little about the Japanese except that they are hopelessly polite, so you would probably never know if you have offended her, poor girl! I suspect "Pack it in, you smelly git!" is not in her phrase book! ;D Suggest trips to historical locations as Japanese seem very interested in our history ( and I bet she's got a camera!) Also suggest not to attempt Japanese food. The British "version" may make her more homesick for her own cuisine than good old Brit food that you are good at. ;D Good luck!!!
