Does anyone know if pumps shoud be switched off for the winter. My sisters book says to switch it off as the circulating water is colder than if it was off. Janet.

If it is running a filter, no it shouldn't but raised up a little, so as not to mix cold water nearer to the surface with the warmer water below, where any fish or wildlife will be spending the winter. Also it will need to be deep enough, not to freeze. If it is running a waterfall or fountain, yes it should be switched off, taken out, cleaned and stored for the winter. I know of people who leave their fountain running to help with keeping the pond ice free, but normally it is best to take them out.
Hope this helps, Janet. Keith

I keep my pump and filter running 24/7 all year. I have my pump on a beer crate all year too, just in case any pipe work leaks and to keep the water at the bottom of my 3 foot deep pond a little warmer in the winter. I do bypass my waterfalls though as they would work like radiators in reverse through the winter, super cooling the water. BTW moving water won't freeze Janet can you tell us more about your pond or water feature set up please, so we can advise you better
