Having been given a water feature for my birthday 10 years ago which consists of a large round bowl with a smaller one above and filled with stones, which has been moved - and it is very heavy - to France, I have finally admitted defeat. I didn't matter what I used to try and keep it clean and sludge-free (all wildlife friendly products) after spending an hour or so cleaning it out, the pump would give up after a week or so and the stones would be covered in slime. I have several friends who have done what I am doing - drilling holes in the bottom and converting it into an alpine garden. I look at all these pristine water features at Chelsea or created by Charlie Dimmock and wonder what they look like after a few months. Has anyone been successful in keeping one going - relatively troublefree? If so, what type? It is nice to have the sound of tinkling water on a hot summer's day and I would like to try again if it was not going to be so laborious. Also, has anyone been successful with the solar fountains in a pond?

I think some people use chlorine tablets in them to keep the algea and slime away....like the ones you can use in swimming/paddling pools.
Not very bug friendly though if that's what you wanted.

What a shame GF although I can understand why you have given up. Maybe it was in too much sun and needed a bit of shade from surrounding plants. Not heard anything on the solar fountains. I'd be interested in info on them too, I'll start a thread GF and we'll see what folk have to say
