About 5 years ago, i bought a superb little koi from a back street aquarium shop. It was almost luminous blue. I'd never seen anything like it and unfortunately, it jumped out and died....i hadn't seen anything like it since either. Until today that is when i went to the aquatic section in the local Wyevale. In there were two of the most gorgeous "blue" koi....both adorned with orange. So i got them both. They're only 6" long but already up there with the big boys competing for food. Here's a couple of pics before they went into the pond Left side is an asagi and the right side is a shusui (just like the one i lost) This is the Asagi....one koi that has been on my wish list for a few years And this is the shusui

Oh they are gorgeous Andy. See what you mean about the way the blue sort of shines with a cold light. How fast do they grow? I bet, even at that size, they don't come cheap! Best of luck on the leaping out thing!

£23 for the pair....an absolute bargain.
I know it's down to the individual fish but with warm water, lots of oxygen and good, high protein food, there's no reason why they won't double in size by this time next year

They are lovely Andy my sister has koi in her pond that are over 40 years old. She had a lot of her coloured ones stolen it wasnt herons because they were massive it would have to be a very strong heron to get them out. She knows they were stolen as the thief waited till they were away on holiday.

i can't post photo's much to technical for me, so i've grabbed a couple of the web which are similar. the silver one is a newish one i bought it at the same time as what i thought was orange asagi. spine pattern is the same but mine has no white markings. fingers crossed this works. asagi.http://www.exomarc.com/default_zone/thumbnails/koi_shusui_asagi_40000.jpg

that one is very similar. i bought it last year as a 3" and it's doubled it's size. don't like to pay a lot for them as i'd rather grow my own, bit like gardening really. we have a aquarium place near us and they had some koi which were over a thousand pound . just imagine the heron getting that one

I cant go there as I would shrivel up and die. A heron getting a prized fish. No, no, no.

wikipedia have a very informative definition, we have three, a silver and two orange and black, love the way they kiss you'r fingers lost three in transportation, bought new ones, need lots of space, as growth is relative to age and size of pond. right now have frog spawn in pond, waiting to see whether they eat tad poles or not.......

The blasted heron had my last two. And Camilla had two goldfish Marge and Homer) that she won at the fair when she was 3 (now 14) they were in a butler sink converted to mini pond and he has had them as well. We are reluctant to replace them now we know the heron is about. Andy yours are gorgeous. CJ

SS....they won't eat the spawn unless desperately hungry but they will eat the tadpoles...lots of high protein food just when they need it.
The single threads are, as you've correctly said, toad spawn.
If you don't want the tadpoles eaten, why not take the spawn to a local pond or stream or put them in a big vat or container in the garden (unless you have another spare wildlife pond) just to give them a chance....frogs and toads are the gardeners friends.

happy to hear that, will move them down the hill to the lake, lots of mosquito larvae, should keep them plump. found a toad bigger than my fist this evening, had made itself a dimple in the ground, must be very old and wise, many an escargot......
