Is she feeding still? You could try a small water change, which may spur things on. If not and if she is egg bound you may need the help of a vet, as the eggs will rot inside her. Do the scales protrude at all, a bit like a pine cone effect? If so it may have Dropsy and the prognosis will not be good. Overweight could mean lots of things though, even a greedy fish, but maybe best to get a vet involved to be on the safe side!
Hope this helps.

thanks madonplants.
she looks very healthy, if cylindrical, no loose or funny scales, and is feeding and growing. the big fish (about 6", and she is about 4") has started butting her more again today. how long are they supposed to go? the container is a meter across and half deep, and they get a watering can full of rainwater with mozzie larvae in every other day, and the exess water overflows (all very gently), so the water is crystal clear. why would changing the water affect her? there are 2 big pots, one with a lily, and the other raised up into the shallows with just gravel that i put in for her to spawn on if she liked. my first fish so bit worried!

Sorry for not getting back to you, not been well over the weekend. Not sure how long they carry eggs for, but if the male is 'chasing' the female, it seems that she is releasing pheromones to interest him. Is it chasing or is it bullying! In such a small area, it could be bullying and the only way that can be proved is to moved the larger one to somewhere else. I mentioned the water change as fish need ideal conditions to spawn in as well as being on a good diet beforehand. Have you fed anything else, other that the mozzie larva, like flake? Maybe if you are regulary putting in fresh, that should be OK. Have you got any oxygenating plant in there as well?
Again sorry for getting back late, had a bad case of Abdominal Colic!!

I noticed this question a couple of days ago, but didn't want to chip in, as my experience was with an indoor fish, a fancy goldfish. It developed a swelling, on one side, and it eventually made the fish swim a little off kilter. However, it lived to be 12 years old, and apart from its strange shape, it looked fine and fed well. But there was never any nudging to go with the lump.

sorry to hear that madonplants thanks for replying, and weeterrier. yes there is plenty of oxygenating weed too, and i give them brown pellets (wheat? they preferred the old multicoloured ones and the live food). is 300 odd litres a small space? there are 4 fish of between 3 and 6" and some tiddlers (about 8) i added recently from ma's pond which has had a population explosion. they all seem to get on very well, the shubunkin follows the big orange one round lots, it looks sweet. i'm sure it is eggs, the bulge is very evenly distributed, and because of the big fishes reaction. it just seemed 2 months was a long time...

I'm off for the next few days, so I would keep an eye on it and see how it goes. If you get worried, speak to a vet or even your local aquatic dealer. 300l is not too small, 'at the moment'. Might be an idea to give a more varied diet. Fish spawn better on a good diet. Wheatgerm is really for autumn and spring. I presume it's a shubunkin nudging another shubunkin, isn't it?

no, i got 2 but one dissapeared. the big fish who does the butting is an ordinary goldfish, all others are smaller than the shib. she is still growing, eating, moves a bit slower than the others, not surprising, she looks like a little blimp, and docks like one too. i am giving them mozzie larvae, a new multicoloured pellet food, and yesterday they got some fly maggots...mmmmm

one of my sarassas always looked pregnant and it was like that for over a year, it didn't seem to suffer any ill effects. can't find it now though, can't decide whether a cat has caught it or whether its gone to a watery grave. it was one of my favourites as the tail was as long as the body .it looked very graceful swimming

well, the subunkin looks much slimmer now and is moving faster. i read somewhere else about fancy types getting constipated, and the pic looked similar to mine, so i did what it said and fed them some peas a few weeks ago. so maybe that was the problem all along!
