While we were on holiday my BIL had a phone call to say that the filter on his pond had gone wrong and all the fish were dead as the water had drained out of the pond. He had had the fish (Koi) for years and was heartbroken.

that's awful - how very sad Who ever was looking after his pond must have had a dreadful shock once he discovered what had happened - it must have emptied very quickly. I do hope he will stock his pond again. Maybe he should consider a float switch next time - once the water reaches the switch it will turn the pump/filter off, avoiding a pond being pumped dry. I used to keep my pump on a crate, which meant that water below the pump, would always remain.

Fingers crossed that nothing like that happens again.
