from old windows ? My living room window is being replaced next weekend by french doors ..... just in time for winter ! good timing eh ? The unit that's being replaced is fairly large and i'm going to keep it for when i get a lottie. obviously i'm going to need some more, but i'm going to ask Mr friendly window replacement man to save me some when he does some other replacements. I've seen some magnificant crystal palace structures at a couple of allotments but have no idea where to even start building one from scratch. any d-i-yers ever done this ?

Hiya mrskp, I'm not a builder but I'm a fantastic bodger so this is right up my street! If I was doing it, I would build a really sturdy subframe, out of 3"X3" timber at least and then spend some time working out a wind/rat/rain/burglar proof way of attaching your windows. Are you building cold frames or going for the stand-in greenhouse/crystal palace? A cold frame is pretty straightforward but a bigger structure needs to be much more secure - I use baler twine for a lot of things but I think you may need screws and nails! Sounds like fun though. I LOVE getting stuff like that for nothing. Post a piccie when it's done.

wanna come help ?? I was thinking (perhaps rather over enthusiastically) of having a freestanding palace. then if the local urchins do play havoc, the replacement costs would just be to phone mr nice window man again. this won't happen for a good long while yet, so i've plenty of time to hatch a cunning plan. ;D

I'm dreaming now - but what about? Crystal palace right in the centre of your allotment, each aspect has a different canvas pull out roof, underneath one a comfy sofa, coffe table, pile of garden books: next one - a camp kitchen complete with table: next side, a bar with fridge for evening entertainment; and finally a couple of hammocks for when you're too knackered to go home. Spreading out from each side a beautiful vegetable bed each planted with its perfect companions for easy rotation. At each corner a shed, a set of compost bins, a mini orchard/fruit cage and a chicken run......you in the crystal palace gently repotting...good,eh?

The way this is developing maybe you could do B&b from the allotment! it sounds like an african hunting lodge! Im not allowed glass on the allotment, sadly but this would be a project I would consider if I was. I would start by putting posts in the ground, and making a level floor, then go up from there.

I think I could live with that 4P ! i do like the "gently" bit! along with some of my other saved from the skip freebies sweetleaf, i've got a couple of large size perspex sheets which i rescued when they stole half our smoking shelter at work to make it legal. would you not be allowed a polycarb g/h @ the lottie, or do they still count that as glass ?

if money's no object sweetleaf, norfolk greenhouses do an excellent range for less than a couple of hunnerd. my 6 x 6 was £175. www.norfolk-greenhouses.co.uk/shop/shop.php?category=Greenhousesmy lottie doubles up as steptoe's back yard ....... occupational hazard of being a gardener i guess and just waiting for a proper lottie to dump it all on. ;D now if only i could find someone that's good with a hammer !

I let the window units go Busy Bee, there was enough junk lying around the garden and just didn't have the space behind the shed to store them.
I've moved from 16th to 11th on the lottie waiting list, so don't envisage taking ownership anytime soon and can contact Mr Window Man when I'm settled and know what I need. I've still got the perspex behind the shed though waiting for a handy man to be ...... erm .... handy.
Since I posted my crystal palace message, I have got myself the new patio doors AND a brand new deck to walk out onto have sip my early morning cuppa or evening glass of g&t (when the lashing rain and gale force wind stops - around next may)
the main focus til next season is digging over and improving the neighbour's bed that runs up the middle of the two gardens. she has no interest in gardening at all so i'm left to play which is great. I've managed to house my 4th compost bin in her bit, and use her washing line. my empire is growing.
;D
