as soon as i stop picking these damn cherry toms and finally come to the conclusion that the aubs aren't going to fruit now, i'm going to lay the g/h bases.
first i was thinking of slab paths up the middle with gravel either side, now i'm thinking all slabbed.
who has what bases in their crystal palaces and why ?
cheers.

Hello mrskp, 2 of my greenhouses have concrete paths with gravel each side and the other one has paving slabs and gravel each side
I haven't got a good reason - just think it looks better like that!

Hi Mrskp,
I have concrete slabs forming a centre path in both of my greenhouses, and then laid (mixed) concrete either side.
Originally, the 'big' greenhouse (10'6 x 8') had soil one side and slabs the other but this was impossible to keep clean.
With a completely concrete floor area, it is a simple matter to scrub out with a Jeyes fluid solution once or twice a year as circumstances allow. Also the staging is bolted to the concrete for extra stability.

My greenhouse base is concrete, it was a base for some weird construction the previous owners built.
The tunnels have weed supressant matting.

I originally intended to have slabs down the middle and soil either side, but found that it was an easy entry point for slugs so filled in the soil areas with paviours, which were easy to lay on sand, which I mixed with quite a liberal amount of SALT....no slugs since!

Mine is a small S/hand G/H, which OH erected for me. He laid a slab path in the centre with weed membrane & chippings either side (S/H too, thanks to dad.) Unfortunately little 'M' likes playing with the chippings & I end up with it everywhere. Also the weeds have started to come back. If i had my time all over again. I would have an all concrete floor. ;D slugs & snails always find a way into my g/h. I take great delight in lobbing them at the shed. ;D I used to use murphy's slug-it, until I found a hedgehog sleeping under the shelving.( I named him 'snuffle guff'. cause every time I moved something he made a snuffling noise.) happy Greenhousing. Alicat.

I did dig a lot of bricks up when I started my veg plot 12 years ago, and have found several more around the garden since then. Not quite what you expect in a forty-two year old house/garden, but perhaps the previous owners weren't great diggers! As for the cement/sand proportions for the concrete. I'm not too sure of these just off hand, but you should be able to find these online. I think I've seen a Tommy Walsh concrete 'recipe' somewhere, so perhaps that would be a good search to start with.

for the time being, i've decided to go the easy route and just fill the bases with gravel.
that's until the deck is built over the patio and i can recycle the slabs.
the first tonne is arriving next week.

It's prolly a bad idea...but our GH doesn't really have a base at all (will no doubt now fall down)...it's sort of wedged into the ground...with gravel round the ouside. Meeces overwinter in there...but generally don't cause me too much trouble...unfortunately snails can climb even the roughest staging (made from packing-crates)...but a good dose of slug pellets keeps the numbers down. I remove the slats off the staging in the summer and grow my tomatoes and cucumbers in the GH border too..

I'd "have words" but they were very kind in reorganising the delivery day from yesterday to today.
I rang them up at 7.30am yesterday morning (from Bedford) saying I wouldn't be in to take delivery. I was worried I'd got the cleaner, as I didn't take his name, but it turned up today right on time.
I thought maybe my kinda washed wasn't theirs ! lol

as promised ;D Cleaned, disinfected, and salted The chilli side of the house and the peppers (and some other bits and bobs) I do quite like the underfoot "crunch" of the gravel. Makes me think I'm on a beach. ;D

Thanks, I got a bit of a deal on that. I'd had my eye on their website for a while, but then saw they were advertising on ebay ! So got the two of them for £50 (£30 cheaper than the site). I know, I know, £50 is still a fair chunk, but the OH just doesn't "do" DIY and I'd have still be waiting this time next year for him to build anything. It's not the flashiest but it was dead easy to erect (open the box, unfold, slot in the shelf - voila !) and it fits along my 8' exactly and is nice and deep too. here's the web site, but do a search on ebay too, the girl is very friendly and most accommodating. she held the original for me while the second one was being obtained to save on delivery (another plug for the Welsh). www.greatgardenproducts.co.uk/green_house_staging.html ;D

Cheers mrskp. great site. You had a great deal on the staging. my OH is a great DIYer - I wonder which would be cheaper.

well that's the other thing, unless you've got transport to cart lengths of wood about, or have loads of the stuff lying around, sometimes it's just as cheap to buy online and have delivered (which for the two was £10!).
if you wanted close up shots for your OH to examine, that can be arranged.

thanks lily. mine is on clay too. REALLY heavy stuff. makes for good solid paths and bases, but is a buggar to dig eh ?
i started this project last February and must have imported and dug in a couple of tonne of improving stuff since i started. i'm also waiting for a deck to be laid where my patio currently is, close to the house, so i'll be reclaiming some of the 2' x 2' slabs for g/h paths.
the birdies like the gravel though and about half a dozen of them were dust bathing in it the other day. i will need to get out there with the jeyes.

My fault. I keep forgetting to bookmark.!! I have a large car & stuff lying around Just need OH to find time.- He enjoys it really. Just need to motivate him. (so close up shots might be of help.) Will let you know if thats alright. Many thanks. Alicat.
