Since laying the gravel base, my sparras love going in there and chewing at the stones.
They don't appear to be interested in the plants at all.
Should I be discouraging them or are is it safe to let them play ?

The sparrows may be after the salts on/in the gravel.... it wont harm them, make sure there is water available for them though.

oh that's quite interesting. they do have a bird bath not too far from there and they know where it is, but maybe I'll put another water tray down for them so that they don't have to look for it.
