I grew some lovely gerbera jamesonii giant flowered hybrids from seed this year and want to keep one of the plants overwinter. (Gave the others away to friends). I've dug it up, popped in an 8" pot with JI No1 with some horticultural grit mixed in, then stood the pot on the staging in the GH. That was last weekend and it seems to be still alive...should I do owt else?
OOh and some of the leaves have teeny-tiny holes in them, I had a good furtle around and couldn't find any greeblies so I gave it a spray with an 'organic' pest spray......
any advice gratefully received as I'm making it up as I go along... CPB ;D

Hi CPB To say you are making it up as you go along, youve not done bad so far. As for the holes im not sure what it could be but watch out for caterpillars im plagued by them at the moment.

Oh CPB, I care about your Gerbera! They are lovely flowering plants. Here, I heavily mulch them and they over winter outside. I think for your plant inside, water sparingly when he looks like he needs a "swig" but be careful to not overwater as it will perish quickly because it will succumb to mould! Look under the leaves for any insects that may be eating your plant. Do you see any evidence of a slime trail that may be an indication of snails or slugs? Keep your plant in a sunny spot and replant outside when the weather is right. C3D

I have kept them over winter in a cold greenhouse under fleece on cold nights, they got going earlier but grey mould was a constant problem. They had a lovely time this year didn't they.
