Hi I have a rather odd christmas cactus in my greenhouse. It didn't flower last year at christmas but more like half way through January and then proceeded to flower another 2 times during this year. At the moment it is sitting with quite a lot of flower buds on it that are just dying to come out. Ive left it in the greenhouse still as I think that if I bring it home, the heat will just make it flower, but I really would like to have it home for christmas and flowering on Christmas day. Any ideas on how to keep it from flowering in the next 3 weeks or so? Julz

I have a lovely big Christmas Catus too Julz. I'm not sure on how long they take to open but it does seem to take an age from when you first see the tiny buds on the ends to them actually become full buds and opening into a flower. Mine certainly lasts for more than 3 weeks. It is in my bedroom where there is no heating at all so that may the reason mine seems to be in flower for ages. If you leave it in the GH watch out for the cold nights, some fleece over it may be a good idea at night or it could get frosted

Yeah...keep it cool and dry and hopefully it'll last until xmas. The only problem you might have is that after keeping it cool and dry, it might not flower untill February.
If it isn't coming into flower by the 20th, bring it in to the warm, give it some water and see if you can force it on a bit !!!
Good luck.

My very elderly aunt has a Christmas cactus that is wonderful when it flowers, it is enormous, but that is the problem I think, it is just too big.
Would it accept being reduced in size quite drastically, and if so how exactly?

I am not very successful at keeping Christmas Cactus after it has finished flowering-- I dont have a Greenhouse now and the rooms in our Flat are all of a similar temperature. I do stand them in the garden during the Summer months but what to do with them during the colder months is my problem. Any suggestions?

Would it accept being reduced in size quite drastically, and if so how exactly? Pip Have only just noticed this question, sorry. These plants root very easily from segments snapped off of the main plant, and sat in compost. (Too easily : I'd try to make some new plants, and take quite a bit of growth away from the Mother plant, just by snapping between the segments. My main plant and the cuttings are just about to burst into flower. I keep them cool, in good light, and I seriously neglect them.

Mine has a few buds, which are growing fast and will be over by Christmas. Hopefully it will produce more. It usually does between Feb and easter.

Mine, kept indoors, has been flowering for a couple of weeks and is just coming to its end. I am going to try to root some pieces of it, as advised by WT and hope I am successful as it is a plant I love. I have had mine about 4years and it never fails to delight

Mine's not as big as Mrs F's but it's certainly been in flower for about a month. It keeps loosing branchs though.
My Nan had one about 3 feet across just smothered in flowers that she'd had for years, it was always a big talking point.

Mrs Fs is in a pot 6 inches tall by 9inches across. I am going to follow WTs advice on cuttings, maybe next year there will be several plants.
