One for Mick here. Bought this lovely succulent....i think it's a crassula sp. Anyway, i bought it a year ago and i've just noticed it's covered in yellow flowers. Absolutely delightful. Any ideas for an ID ? TIA

Yup.
Believe it or not it's a cactus - Hatiora salicornioides. Funnily enough I was readin an article on it last night in my American journal. It is one of the epiphytic cacti. Something I want a few more of for the garden in summer as hanging plants on an East facing fence.

Thanks for that Mick. So being epiphytic, does it require a higher humidity or anything special ?
If you want any cuttings from it when it's finnished flowering, i can happily send you a load.

Andy, you're obviously doing fine with it so keep doing whatever it is!
Basically, epiphytic cacti would appreciate a little more humidity and less sun than ordinary cacti. Also they shouldn't dry right out. You can treat them as you would Xmas cacti.
Thanks for your kind offer of cuttings but I am after hanging epiphytes - mostly Rhipsalis species.

Rhipsalis (possibly Rhipsalidopsis ?)....are they the huge leaved, night flowering and orchid cactus. I remember having something like that in the Palm house i used to look after and that was grown as an epiphyte !!!

No Andy. They can have large leaves (stems strictly speaking) but some can be like bootlaces.
The flowers are generally small and white.
The ones you mean are probably epiphyllum hybrids although not night flowering. Selenicereus (another epiphytic cactus) is night flowering with huge flowers. Also Hylocereus.
Rhipsalidopsis is another cactus altogether. Small reddish stems with magnificent pink flowers in spring. Tends to fall apart after flowering.

I like that Hatiora salicornioides. I googled it and its common name is comically "Drunkards dream" supposedly the stem sections look like whisky bottles, the site showed it as a hanging basket plant with a 2metre height and spread in nature......that would be a very big basket then!Your one looks healthier than theirs btw ;D Where did you buy yours Andy? oh...... heres the site. www.plantoftheweek.org/week202.shtml
