I bought a couple from Tescos, "complete with bulb and glass vase" - buy one get one free The sort where the bulb just sits above the water line. But I can't work out why it says in the instructions - discard after flowering Any one any thoughts as to why? It seems such a shame to throw the bulb away

What utter rot! Plant it Rita ! The bulb has obviously been prepared for earlier flowering but that doesnt mean it will die after, just that its flowering time will be different next year... I have always put them in the garden afterwards and they last for a few years before they fail. They obviously want to make you keep buying new ones every year.

We throw all our bulbs away at work after flowering. So if anyone wants 2,000 tulips come May....you'll need to bring a transit to Brighton

Probably stops them being dug up by man or beast and sprouting up in nasty unplanned shapes next year lol
A lot of the plants we have say that they last one season such as the dahlias I bought last year. They don't say that you can lift them and replant them after frost. I do think they work on the basis that most people don't know what they're doing and in not looking after them they'll need to buy new ones next year. Or maybe it's a safeguard so that if it doesn't come back the year after they can't be accused of lying. The labels are tiny anyway, couldn't fit all the best care instructions on there anyway! Our customers rely on us lot at the checkouts that know a bit about plants to advise them.

No need to chuck it. Plant it it will come up again. Less big flowers but still good enough. Bulbs that are grown for the flowers are usually so stressed that they hardly flower the next year. But most do come round again. Never as big as bought but good enough. I suppose they started the throw away clause because people complained about the bulbs not doing very well the next year. .... Hm, no probably just a way of making more money... honestly not being cynical sortoflopsidedsmiley
