Hello all Excuse me if this is a dumb question. I am growing some Harebells [Campanula Rotundifolia] from seed. As they are also known as Scottish Bluebells, I was wondering if they have to form bulbs before they flower, as I'm not used to campanulas being bulbs. Just wanted to get an idea of how long it would be before I can expect any flowers [in years]. I have some just germinated. Thanks.

Exciting! Having consulted the back of my fag packet....I sowed on 6 March last year and got some flowering ....not a lot mind you, but I didn't exactly try to keep them dampish or shady. Come Autumn, you will find that should you dig them up in the "green" they look like little "spring onions"....well that's the best I can describe for the mo Other folk may be more knowledgable <wellitwouldn'tbehardsmiley>

I grew them last year, didn't realise they would become bulbs They flowered within the year and then died back.

Wow, so I may get flowers this year. That would be excellent! What you are saying is they will actually manage to form bulbs this year? I'm amazed they do it that quick, I expected it to take a year or two. I've got them germinating indoors in a bright spot, is that ok, or should I move them somewhere less bright? And put out after frost etc. etc...? I am excited, I think they are gorgeous! ;D

Well one certainly finds out interesting things. I didn't know that Harebells form bulbs and now I know what my OH threw out in Autumn when he was digging........
Will get some more - definately - I love most varieties of Campanula anyway.

I apologise for misleading, I got mixed up with the previous entry (I'm not going to embarrass myself in saying what ) on my short form notes. I consulted my "proper" notes today and they say propagate by seed, basal cuttings or division (after 3 years). Which strongly suggests they do NOT form bulb type looking things. An early sowing will hopefully see flowering (as mine did), but they will be stronger in years 2 & 3. Sorry once again for getting into a confuzzeled state.....

No worries CC, just pleased to hear they won't take 3 or 4 years for the first flower. No one can get more confuzzled than me! ;D
