Hi. Hope this is the right place...anyway, my wonderful husband has bought me an orchid for valentines day I don't know what type. It has a central stem with lots of white nasturtium type flowers. The leaves are long and around 2 inches wide, very glossy with a pronounced central crease. It is absolutely beautiful. However, it's about 20 inches tall in a 5 inch across pot. It is staked, but still waving about. I haven't a clue how to take care of it! It appears to have a thin white root protruding from the top of the soil. Do I repot it? Does it need feeding? HELP!!!! I don't want it to die!

Not that technological, I'm afraid... Does the variety greatly determine the care? How should I care for my Sainsbury's orchid?!

Think you may be right Andy. Perhaps it is a cymbidiam.

generally speaking yes....there are a few varieties (Phaelenopsis, Zygopetalum and Cymbidium) which are pretty easy to care for. But to keep them from year to year, they do require a few guidelines (look it up in the link i gave you).
Some orchids require certain night temperatures, some require high humidity, some like shade, some like sun.
Try to find out what variety you have and it will be a lot easier to help you.

Hi RM. Have you found which one it is yet. A cymbidium has strappy leaves which come of a sort of bulb looking thing & the flowers are sort of pendulus. The phalanopsis (sp) is very different. They usualy have sticks to support the flowers. My phalanopsis leaves have been known to go yellow at the base & I gently pull them off. Sorry my descritions aren't very good but I hope they help. RM Iv'e just re-read your description & it sounds like a phalanopsis to me. Janet.
