I don't have a huge garden, and I do have two small children, so I'm probably mental really Thing is, I really want a proper greenhouse. I love the idea of being able to grow my own bedding, and over winter some more tender plants (love those blousy fuschias!) I was wondering how those of you with greenhouses have fitted them in to your gardens, and (being very nosey here) roughly how much you paid. There seems to be a huge range of prices for what appears to be the same thing Also, what size is usable? The 6 x 4 seem very tiny...

What size can you realistically fit in without it a) looking hideously out of place or b) getting in the way of the kids etc.
I would've said a 6x4 or a 6x6 would be ideal for a small garden. Bearing in mind that you don't have a GH, so you wont of missed one. However, whatever you choose, it'll never be big enough....you'll always need more space.

I wouldn't be without my greenhouses Rosemother ;D I would always encourage anyone who is interested to 'go for it' ;D You could have a greenhouse wi th polycarbonate instead of glass - safer ;D My greenhouses are situated at the end of the garden -which is approx.80 ' long x 35 ' wide. We also have a fairly large shed as well ;D

I have had a GH for years..inherited it from my Father in Law so it didn't cost anything ;D . We had 2 young children in the garden playing football but only once had a broken window. I only started using the GH properly about 10 years ago tho..up until then I wasn't really gardening much (no time)...OH used to keep parts of a TR7 he was restoring in there until I turfed him out of there! I'd probably go along with the polycarbon idea...glass is too dangerous with children about. oh yes...it's in a sunny spot in the back corner of the garden.

you could try one of the smaller plastic greenhouses which the likes of B&Q sell quite cheap. It might be worth it just to see how you go? My neighbour grew his tomatoes last year in a little mini one (about 3-4feet) which he bought for about £10.

A greenhouse is great, buy one as large as your garden will allow. You won't regret it.

I love my greenhouse - it is my refuge from the world!! I bought an 8x6 green aluminium one from B and Q about 4 years ago.It comes with a metal base and OH put it up without much trouble.I can't remember how much it was, but it was quite reasonable and it is lovely, lovely, lovely!!

Thanks for all the replies! ;D Thing is, we're converting our garage, so need to put in a shed. I'm curious, do you think you can have a lean to greenhouse against a shed?

Can't see why not. Shed or house makes no difference. When the shed is wood you will have to give it a very good coating to prevent it rotting ( maybe get some isolation material agains it ) but that is just good maintenance.

As Dutchy said, I can't see why not either If you do, it might be a good idea to maybe put something reflective on the shed side so you get max light, not sure what though. Will put thinking cap on ;D

I have a small garden too...my sister came round with a plastic GH today...should have been £29.99 and she got it for £12!! (half price plus her discount as she works at Woolies)
We've set it up in the conservatory and guess what?...it's full already with dahlia, geranium, gerbera, trifolium, lobelia, cobaea scandens, pepino, cineraria, and cape gooseberry seedlings..the idea was to give me more room in there...um... ;D

I would be lost without my GH if you can fit one and can get a the size you can afford go for it. Mine is 8 by 10 foot and is not big enough in spring i have the room for one that size it is over 30 years old though they are very expensive nowdays.
