Hi all,
A friend has a lovely orange Datura which is just coming into leaf ... at what point should one take cuttings, and how easily do they root? There seems to be conflicting info on the net ... cheers ...

They will root easily if you can prent as much water loss from the cutting as possible. If you can, i'd try to sneak two cuttings....put one in water and the other in soil in a poly bag.
The cuttings need to be about 3" long and you need to remove as many of the leaves as possible leaving only the top two. If these leaves at the top are too big....cut them in half (this is common practice in large leaved cuttings to help prevent as much water loss as possible).
Once you've taken the cuttings, get them into water or soil/poly bag as soon as possible....daturas are a nightmare for water loss.
Should root fairly well once they've got over the innitial shock although i confess to only growing them from seed before.
Good luck

Andy, you're a wonder for detailed understandable explanations - thank you! What is the best time to take them? (Incidentally, this is a friend with a garden installed by a landscape company - some gorgeous plants - he is quite used to me arriving with secateurs by now!) ... cheers ...

I'd take them as softwood cuttings so that means as soon as the growth is long enough...probably late april to late may.
