Have just bought my first pot of rooting hormone! ;D Now, how easy would it be to get new plants from my smoke bush 'royal purple' and my 'red robin'? Is it the right time of year to take these cuttings?

Smoke bush...= absolutely no chance
Red robin...= pretty good chance.
Smoke trees (cotinus) are usually layered or grafted and do not root very well from cuttings whereas Photinia red robin will root readily from semi ripe cuttings taken now.

RM ... once you've got your rooting hormone, you'll get the cutting bug! All those lovely plants for free - only problem is where do you put them (gazing at 8 baby fuchsias on my window sill) ... seriously, it's a great sense of achievement when something takes! ... cheers ...

Sorry Andy beg to disagree- I have managed to take cuttings from a Smoke Bush--I thought these had died--but on two consecutive years I have managed them.--Probably Lucky?

One lesson I have definitely learnt is not to give up a cutting ... I took a few Fuchsia Genii in the spring, and last week was about to throw them out in despair ... when I notice a few tiny lime-green leaves emerging ;D ... cheers ...
